Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Weakened by the flu, Dallas Mavericks coach Don Nelson missed the game. The Los Angeles Clippers made his players look weak. Corey Maggette scored 26 points and the Clippers pounded their way to a 115-105 victory over the Mavericks, who have lost a season-high three straight games. Quentin Richardson had 25 points and 13 rebounds and Elton Brand had 22 and a season-high 20 for Los Angeles, which had 20 offensive boards, including eight in the fourth quarter to turn back a rally by Dallas and snap a six-game road losing streak. "Elton and Q did a tremendous job on the boards," Maggette said. "Between the two of them they had 33 rebounds. Come on, man, sometimes (teams) have that in a game. That was big for us." Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history, was ailing and turned over the reins to his son, assistant Donnie Nelson. The younger Nelson picked up a technical foul in the final period, when the Clippers muscled the Mavericks. A follow shot by Richardson gave LA a 103-92 lead with 5:37 left. Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 23 points, had a three-point play to cut the deficit to 103-99 with 4:15 to go. Bobby Simmons made a free throw and Richardson had a basket. After two free throws by Nowitzki, Brand scored on another follow shot and drained a jumper for a 110-101 lead with 1:47 remaining. "Elton was a monster on the boards in the second half," Dunleavy said. "He made a couple of really, really big plays." "When we needed stops we got stops, but they were there to get tip-ins or second-chance shots," said Dallas forward Antawn Jamison, who scored 26 points off the bench. Simmons collected 12 points and seven assists for the Clippers, who scored 22 second-chance points. They have beaten the Mavericks twice in 10 days after winning just two of the previous 19 meetings. Steve Nash had 20 points and 11 assists for Dallas, which never led in the second half and trailed by as many as 18 points. Playing plenty of zone, the Mavericks were outrebounded, 55-46. "When you're playing zone, which they play a lot of, it's not as easy at times to block out," Dunleavy said. "Sometimes we're not in ideal position and sometimes you've got to box out from a different area when balls are flying everywhere," Walker said. "They were able to come up with all the loose balls and come up with big plays." Brand had a double-double in the first half as LA grabbed a 61-54 lead. Maggette scored seven points in the final 2 1/2 minutes of the third period, keeping the margin at 91-82 entering the fourth quarter.
