Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Darrell Armstrong made just two baskets, but his words in the shootaround helped Baron Davis make a lot more. After a pregame chat with Armstrong, Davis scored 25 points as the New Orleans Hornets snapped a season-high three-game losing streak with a 94-89 victory over the pesky Memphis Grizzlies. Although he had topped 20 points in four of his previous five games, Davis hadn't shot well. He made just 9-of-23 shots in Thursday's ugly home loss to Sacramento but after a talk with Armstrong during the shootaround, he shot 47 percent (10-of-21). "I talked to Baron about being agressive and being our leader," said Armstrong, who scored nine points in 23 minutes. "I thought that maybe I could say something that could get him going again." The talk apparently impacted Davis, whose energy helped the Hornets grab an early lead and avoid a fourth straight loss. The NBA leader in 3-pointers made and attempted, he also shot 3-of-7 from the arc. "When we play well, we always follow his energy at the beginning of the game," Armstrong said. "The last three games we did not start out tremendously well, but tonight we got off to a great start thanks to his leadership." "We went back to practice and back to the drawing boards," Davis said. "(In practice), you fix things and correct mistakes that you had. That was one of the biggest things we wanted to correct. I think everything worked well and we have to build on this and get back to where we are." Davis also dished out 12 assists and one of them seemed to seal the win. With two defenders near him in the low post, he fed George Lynch, whose uncontested 3-pointer made it 88-74 with 4:39 remaining. Prior to setting up Lynch, Davis also set up a pair of dunks by Jammal Magloire, who finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. But it wasn't just Davis that bounced back. David Wesley, who shot 10-of-35 during New Orleans' slide, added 16 points. He hit five of his first six shots in the first nine minutes. As they did all night, the Grizzlies kept coming. They cut the deficit to 90-86 on Shane Battier's 3-pointer with 74 seconds remaining. But Memphis could not continue the comeback as Mike Miller and Earl Watson missed open shots and Armstrong clinched the victory at the foul line. "They just played well," said Memphis guard Bonzi Wells, who scored 18 points. "They did what they've done all year. They go inside and then they go back out. Baron Davis is playing at a high level right now and all the guys around him right now are starting to step up to his level."
