Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers picked the wrong place to try to get their first road win of the season. Peja Stojakovic scored 29 points and Vlade Divac added 26 as the Sacramento Kings pulled away late for a 117-98 victory over the Trail Blazers. Portland, the NBA's only winless team on the road, only trailed 91-86 with 7:10 remaining but the Kings closed with a 26-12 run. "Vlade gave us energy," Stojakovic said. "He was good on defense and really moved well on offense. I haven't seen him move like that for a while." Sacramento, which boasts the league's best home mark, improved to 14-1 at Arco Arena. The Kings, who only led, 55-54, at the intermission, have won seven of their last eight games overall. "I don't know what happened in the first half," Divac said. "We didn't move right. Coach (Rick Adelman) gave us new directions at halftime and we executed." Rasheed Wallace scored 27 points and Zach Randolph contributed 26 for the Trail Blazers, who fell to 0-9 on the road. "We played a good 44 minutes," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We pretty much stopped defending in the last four minutes. A team like Sacramento, a very good basketball team, you have to defend for 48 minutes." The Kings took the lead for good, 68-67, on Stojakovic's 3-pointer with 7:47 left in the third quarter. Divac's layup capped a 7-0 run that made it 81-71 with 3:15 left in the third. "In the third quarter, we turned it up," Adelman said. "Randolph and Rasheed had it going but we were able to open it up." Brad Miller and Mike Bibby scored 18 points apiece for the Kings, who shot 54 percent (43-of-79) from the field. Sacramento picked up 28 assists, led by Divac and Bibby, who each dished out seven. Stojakovic made 9-of-19 shots, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range. Divac was 10-of-16 from the field and Miller 7-of-10. "We were just trying to make shots from the outside and we weren't hitting," Stojakovic said. "Then, we realized that we had to get the ball inside to Vlade and Brad." Sacramento converted 8-of-24 3-pointers, compared to just 2-of-11 for the TRail Blazers, who have dropped six of their last eight.
