Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Golden State Warriors did not disappoint the biggest crowd in franchise history. Speedy Claxton scored 10 of his 19 points in the second quarter and Erick Dampier outplayed Shaquille O'Neal in limited minutes as the Warriors posted a 107-98 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Playing in front of a crowd of 20,310, Golden State overcame a sluggish start and controlled the final three quarters against the best team in the NBA. Los Angeles (20-6) fell into a tie with the Sacramento Kings for the league's top record. "Obviously, this was a big-time win against an excellent basketball team," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "I thought our focus and energy were phenomenal." The Lakers had a 31-23 lead after the first quarter but could not stop the Warriors in the second. Golden State scored 38 points on 15-of-23 shooting in the period and carried a 61-46 cushion into halftime. The Warriors led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter and never were seriously threatened, even though Kobe Bryant scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half for the Lakers. "We never recovered from a brutalizing second period," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "They completely overwhelmed and changed the course of the game. We recovered very slowly but not completely." Dampier had 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and 11 rebounds, despite playing just 31 minutes due to foul trouble. O'Neal finished with 21 points and five rebounds and made only 3-of-10 free throws. "There's a lot of anger in this locker room," O'Neal said. "They outhustled us, outplayed us and outscored us. They played a lot harder than we did and a whole lot smarter." Clifford Robinson scored a season-high 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting and Troy Murphy grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench for Golden State, which shot 48 percent (37-of-77) and had a 42-37 rebounding edge. "I have always liked playing against the Lakers," Robinson said. "I was aggressive and looking for my shot. This just shows that we are capable of beating one of the top teams in the league." Gary Payton handed out a season-high 13 assists for the Lakers, who shot 51 percent (39-of-77) and made eight 3-pointer but were just 12-of-25 from the line.
