Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Peja Stojakovic gave the crowd at Arco Arena want it wanted, which made the Memphis Grizzlies none too pleased. Stojakovic scored a career-high 41 points as the Sacramento Kings used a three-point assault in the fourth quarter to rout the Grizzlies, 114-97. Knowing Stojakovic was close to 40 points, the crowd wanted him to attempt a last shot. Instead of running out the clock, he obliged the fans, driving the right baseline. But he was thrown to the floor by Memphis forward James Posey, who was ejected with 11 seconds left. With the crowd chanting his name, the Kings guard made all three free throws - one for a technical and two for the personal foul - to surpass his previous career high of 39 points. "The fans got in it and we were going back and forth," Stojakovic said. "The game is played 48 minutes and he (Posey) should't worry about playing defense on the last possession but during the first four quarters. If he wanted to make a big defensive play, he should have done it before." "I think he was doing it for the crowd," Kings center Vlade Divac added. "He doesn't care how many he scores. The guy that threw him down should focus on playing defense the first quarter. They should try to stop him before he scores 38 points." The Kings, who trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, made 7-of-11 3-pointers in the final period to break open a close game. The Grizzlies closed to 75-72 early in the fourth quarter. Sacramento finished 9-of-22 from behind the arc after failing to make any 3-pointers in the first half. Brad Miller added 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for the Kings, who shot just under 49 percent (37-of-76) overall. "I just thought that as the game went on we just really maintained a really good mental focus," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "In the first quarter, we came out really flat." Stojakovic finished 11-of-22 from the field, going 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. He also made 14-of-16 free throws. "We put him on the line a lot," Memphis forward Pau Gasol said. "Sixteen times is a lot of times. And he was hot in the fourth quarter." Gasol scored 23 points and Posey added 18 for Memphis, which fell to 1-17 all-time at Sacramento. "This is our fourth game in five nights," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "I thought it was extremely difficult to maintain the lead with them shooting 26 foul shots." Sacramento's first five baskets in the fourth quarter were 3-pointers. With the Kings clinging to a 78-74 lead, Bobby Jackson and Stojakovic each connected from the arc twice as the Kings broke it open.
