Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Shareef Abdur-Rahim made all the big shots down the stretch to help the Atlanta Hawks snap a seven-game losing streak. Abdur-Rahim scored 12 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Hawks held on for a 93-88 triumph over the Boston Celtics. "We were in a bad way," Abdur-Rahim said. "We just refused to let this one get away from us." With 2:19 left, Abdur-Rahim hit a jumper to break an 83-83 deadlock. Vin Baker made a layup at the other end to tie it, but Abdur-Rahim responded by driving for a baby hook shot, then made six free throws in the final minute. "That's what he gets paid to do," Hawks guard Dion Glover said. "He carried us on his shoulders." Aside from a jumper by Jason Terry with 2:50 left, Abdur-Rahim was the Hawks' only scorer over the last 4:22 as they avoided their eighth loss this season when leading in the final five minutes. "It just felt different," Terry said. "I felt we were going to get it done. It was tough down the stretch, but Santa Claus came early." Kris Kringle indeed came early for Terry, who had guaranteed the Hawks would end their skid. "I'm going to keep pounding out these guarantees," Terry said. "We needed it. It tastes real good." Glover scored 18 points for Atlanta and fed Theo Ratliff for an alley-oop dunk that gave the Hawks their first lead, 58-56, with 3:49 to go in the third quarter. "You have a team like the Hawks down 12 with no confidence," said Paul Pierce, who led the Celtics with 15 points but shot just 4-of-16. "You have to put teams like that away, and we didn't do it." Boston was outscored, 55-38, in the second half and outrebounded, 48-32. Pierce missed all seven of his 3-point attempts as the Celtics lost for the third time in five games. "We came out flat," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "We pretty much remained flat for the second half. I think we played tired." The Celtics were unhappy when Boris Diaw clearly shuffled his feet on an inbounds play with 21 seconds left and the Hawks leading, 89-85.
