Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs used a major defensive stand to win their NBA season-high 12th straight game. Duncan scored 27 points and San Antonio held the Orlando Magic to just one field goal in the final six minutes en route to a 98-83 victory. "We're playing great right now," Duncan said. "We're right where we want to be right now." Drew Gooden's jumper with 6:34 left pulled Orlando within 83-81, but San Antonio closed the game with a 15-2 run. Tony Parker scored six points during the spurt and the Magic did not score again until rookie Zaza Pachulia hit a layup with three seconds remaining. "That was the key to the game there," Duncan said. "Bruce (Bowen) picked up his (defense) there against Tracy (McGrady), and Tony put in there for us down the stretch." "The Spurs collectively just play such great defense," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "That's a sign of a good basketball team. They make you work so hard for everything." Duncan scored 47 points in the first meeting between the teams on December 5, when San Antonio began its current streak. He got off to a fast start in this one by scoring 10 points in the first quarter but seemed to focus more on rebounding and defense the rest of the way. The reigning MVP finished with 16 rebounds and blocked five shots. Tony Parker added 22 points and reserve forward Robert Horry had a season-high 14. "I'm feeling comfortable because I'm learning the plays," Horry said. "That's a big key for me because I don't like to go out there and mess up." Tracy McGrady, who scored 41 points in a Christmas Day win, led Orlando with 24 but shot just 8-of-21 from the field. Juwan Howard added 13 points as the Magic lost their sixth straight game against San Antonio. The Spurs are the hottest team in the league after getting off to a slow start. They had not won 12 in a row since a 13-game run from March 1-25, 2002 and have not lost since dropping a December 3 home game against the Los Angeles Lakers. "We're trying not to get too confident right now with the streak we're on," Duncan said. "We're trying to bring it every night, and if we keep playing the way we have been, we're giving us a chance to win every game." San Antonio outrebounded Orlando, 47-38, and held a 50-34 scoring advantage in the paint. Despite their struggles in the fourth quarter, the Magic still managed to shoot 43 percent (34-of-79) while the Spurs shot 48 percent (40-of-83). Duncan outrebounded the entire Magic starting frontcourt, 16-15, and McGrady led Orlando with eight boards. Manu Ginobili shot just 4-of-13 from the field for the Spurs but contributed nine rebounds and a team-high seven assists. "So many guys over there make little plays," Magic forward Drew Gooden said. "It really is fantastic to watch them play, how they play together."
