Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- David Wesley needed just one quarter to put away the Atlanta Hawks. Wesley nailed four 3-pointers in scoring 18 of his season-high 32 points in the first 12 minutes as the New Orleans Hornets cruised to a 109-79 thrashing of the Hawks. New Orleans won for just the second time in six games as Wesley did most of the damage. He hit three 3-pointers in a 17-4 tear that gave the Hornets a 23-10 advantage with 4:31 left in the first quarter. "It's a pretty good night," Wesley said. "You can't beat that. It was feeling really good. Nearly every shot that came off my hand was in a good rhythm." Wesley, who made nine of his first 12 shots, added his final 3-pointer of the first quarter for a 30-16 advantage with just under a minute to play. New Orleans led by as many as 19 points before settling for a 53-37 cushion at intermission. "He was unbelievable," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "He put on a shooting exhibition. I've seen him like that before. When he's got it going, you want to keep the ball in his hands. Everybody recognized early that he was the hot guy, and all the big guys were setting screens and trying to get him open." Wesley made 13-of-18 shots and finished 5-of-7 from the arc. He was just 3-of-20 from 3-point range in his previous five games. "Yesterday, I didn't sit around," Wesley said. "Worked up a little sweat on Christmas. We went running. I hate to run, so it might be a good thing. Maybe I'll do it again tomorrow." Point guard Baron Davis scored 21 points, handed out eight assists and added a career-high four blocks. The Hornets' inside game also shined with Brown netting 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. New Orleans scored 40 points off Atlanta's miscues and led by as many as 33 points in the second half. The Hornets held a 34-7 advantage in fast-break points. Nazr Mohammed scored 12 points for the Hawks, who have dropped eight of nine games and nine straight on the road. Atlanta matched a season high with 27 turnovers. "They just came out and kicked our butt," Hawks guard Jason Terry said. "We didn't play any defense, no defense." No starter finished in double figures for Atlanta, which suffered its second-worst loss of the season. The Hawks were drubbed, 114-75, in San Antonio on November 21.
