Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley made sure the Dallas Mavericks would not blow two big leads in the same game. Finley scored 24 points, including a key 3-pointer, as the Mavericks held off the Memphis Grizzlies, 104-98. Dirk Nowitzki collected 18 points and 17 rebounds, Steve Nash chipped in 16 points and 10 assists and Antoine Walker added 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Dallas, which posted its sixth straight home win over Memphis. The Mavericks have taken 12 of the last 13 meetings overall. Dallas blew a 17-point first-quarter lead and saw a 77-59 third-quarter advantage whittled to 92-89 on a jumper by Bonzi Wells with 6:06 remaining. But Finley nailed a 3-pointer 13 seconds later and Antawn Jamison added a jump hook to make it 97-89 with 4:11 left. "You know that teams are going to keep coming at you, regardless of the lead," said Finley, whose team overcame an 18-point deficit in Thursday's win at Sacramento. "We learned that on Christmas Day in Sacramento, so when we have good leads we just have to learn to take care of them." Asked about his team's inability to put away teams, Dallas coach Don Nelson said, "Well, I don't really know how to answer that. We're trying to scramble around and win as many games as we can, and I guess when you put a team away ... I don't know what that means. "We won by six points tonight. Is that putting them away? It beats not putting them away, I guess." Memphis, which lost its sixth straight road game, got no closer than five points thereafter. "It's another hard road loss for us," said Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown, who fainted briefly during a timeout with 4:51 left but coached the rest of the game. "We have been playing them tough, but we can't seem to get the right 10 guys to give us production." Dallas, which sank 13-of-29 3-pointers at Sacramento, made 11-of-20 shots from the arc in this one. Memphis misfired on 16-of-19 attempts. "I think it's a good thing," Finley said. "I think it's something we can't rely on, especially right now, but the 3-point shot has to be a weapon that we can go to at different time, and we have guys who are able to make the shots." Wells, a reserve, scored 12 of his season-high 30 points in the fourth quarter for the Grizzlies, whose season-high losing streak reached five games. "The team and the coaches have a lot of confidence in me to do my thing, so I just have to go out there and deliver," Wells said. "Tonight I played OK, but it doesn't really count if you don't get the victory." Thanks to Wells and Earl Watson, who had 10 points, the Grizzlies' bench outscored the Mavericks' reserves, 53-18. "They had a deeper bench than we did and played it," Nelson said. "We had a hard time against their second unit. They were very athletic. They gave us more problems than their starters and when Hubie stayed with them, I was very worried about the game."
