Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Vince Carter extended the lead for Toronto Raptors with his well-known athleticism and preserved it with his underrated instincts. Carter scored nine of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and drew a key offensive foul down the stretch as the Raptors snapped an 18-game road losing streak against Western Conference teams with a 94-88 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. Toronto had not defeated a Western Conference foe on the road since winning in Memphis on December 1, 2002. It had lost seven road games against the West this season before Carter took over down the stretch at Staples Center. "It's good to get a win, regardless. It doesn't matter where we are," Carter said. "It's not about if we're winning at home or on the road. It's all about us getting back to the team that we should be, getting our execution back and just playing as the team that we're capable of being." "Vince does a good job of getting everybody else into the game for the first three quarters and then taking over in the fourth quarter, which is what your main guy is supposed to do," Raptors guard Jalen Rose said. "When he does that, we've been winning a lot of games." Carter gave the Raptors an 85-81 edge with a hanging floater with 3:44 remaining and, after Los Angeles' Elton Brand made a hook shot, drove through three defenders and made a tough layup over Brand. He was fouled and sank the free throw for an 88-83 cushion with 2:36 to go. Clippers forward Bobby Simmons and Carter traded baskets before Quentin Richardson converted a three-point play to bring Los Angeles within 90-88 with 53 seconds left. Brand blocked Alvin Williams' layup at the other end and the Clippers had a chance to tie when Richardson drove to the basket. He made the layup but was called for an offensive foul as Carter filled the lane. "The play before that, I tried to take the charge and (the referee) called a block," Carter said. "(Richardson) came right back in the lane and I said I'm gonna try again. Not live by the charge and die by the charge, but I thought I was in position." Toronto made 4-of-6 free throws in the final 17 seconds to secure its second win in eight games following a five-game winning streak. "I think winning five games in a row with the trade in the beginning kind of spoiled us," Carter said. "We're trying to get our hunger back. We have to take our intensity and ability to another level." Rose scored 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting and Donyell Marshall added 19 and nine rebounds for the Raptors, who snapped a four-game road slide. Richardson finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Brand added 14 and 13 for Los Angeles, which lost despite a 49-33 rebounding advantage. The Clippers shot less than 40 percent (32-of-81) from the floor but made 22-of-24 free throws and scored 27 points off 17 offensive rebounds. "We missed a lot of time around the hoop," Richardson said. "If we had taken care of business earlier in the game, it wouldn't have come down to the end like it did."
