Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- As he approaches his 19th birthday, rookie LeBron James provided new highlights for the Cleveland Cavaliers. James continued his recent tear with 32 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists as the Cavaliers pulled away for an 86-74 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. James' birthday is Tuesday, and in his final game as an 18-year-old he scored 21 points in the second half, including 12 of the final 16 in the contest. He punctuated the big night with a pair of breakaway dunks in the last minute. "I need to do that for my teammates," James said. "Anytime there's a close game, they look at me as a leader and it's time for me to take over. And I completely did that tonight." "LeBron was sensational down the stretch," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "He's capable of that. When he's not very good, we're not very good. He rose to the occasion tonight." The top overall pick in the draft, James topped 30 points for the fourth time in six games and the sixth time this season. He made 15-of-23 shots and just fell short of his first career triple-double. "Somebody should have told me," James said. "Of all the people in the crowd, one of you (in the media) should have told me." James struggled on November 1 in Portland, but the Trail Blazers had few answers for him in this one. They took a 66-64 lead into the fourth quarter but were outscored, 22-8, and fell behind for good midway through the period on a 6-0 run by James. The clinching spurt started with an off-balance jumper from the corner, which was followed by an aggressive drive. James then called for the ball, posted up against Zach Randolph and spun around a double-team to make it 78-72. "He willed his team to a win," Portland guard Jeff McInnis said. "He was not going to let his team lose tonight, so you have to give him all the credit. As much as we felt we had a bad game, that kid was great tonight." Cleveland improved to 10-21. The Cavaliers did not record their 10th win last season until February 5. The Trail Blazers remained the NBA's lone winless road team at 0-10. It is their worst start away from home since opening the 1980-81 campaign with 13 straight road losses. The eight-point fourth quarter was the worst in team history.
