Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics overcame a rare miserable shooting night with one of their best rebounding efforts of the season. Ray Allen continued to round into shape with 28 points and the SuperSonics used a strong performance on the backboards en route for an 87-86 triumph over the sloppy Houston Rockets. Seattle came in last in the league in rebounding differential and figured to be in trouble in a contest in which it shot just 35 percent (28-of-79) from the field. Usually reliant on the 3-pointer, the Sonics made just 9-of-32 from the arc. But on the road against one of the better rebounding teams, Seattle hung around long enough and made the plays down the stretch. The Sonics never led until Brent Barry's layup with 2:16 to go made it 80-78. Vladimir Radmanovic drilled a clutch 3-pointer 53 seconds later, helping Seattle improve to 7-6 on the road. Radmanovic made just 3-of-10 shots overall but scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, when he added a pair of steals. Seattle held a 47-42 rebounding edge and scored 24 points off 19 Houston turnovers. The backcourt did a stellar job on All-Star Steve Francis, who made just 4-of-12 shots and committed five turnovers. "The way we rebound, we need everybody in the paint," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "We stole the game tonight. It's good to get a W, but we've got to play better basketball." "We did a pretty job on offensive rebounds," Radmanovic said. "That was probably the reason we won the game. We were shooting bad but we got second-chance shots." Allen, in his third game back after missing the first 25, scored 16 points in the opening half. Overall, he was 9-of-21 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. "Ray missed a lot of shots, but he made some key shots," McMillan said. "It's only his third game. You don't find your rhythm in three games." Rashard Lewis added 13 points, including two clutch free throws with 10 seconds to go, and had eight rebounds. "We were just focusing on rebounding as a team," Lewis said. "It takes everybody, not just the big guys. You have to with Yao Ming and (Kelvin) Cato down in the paint." Yao led Houston with 15 points but committed five turnovers in 28 foul-plagued minutes. He felt Seattle's physical approach limited his ability to dominate inside. "They were hitting me in the body a lot, even as I was trying to get up off the ground, they were attacking my legs," Yao said. "When I was trying to get the ball, they were attacking my arms." Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy was upset about his team's inability to do the little things as the Rockets fell to 6-12 when failing to score 90 points. "Turnovers, missed free throws at crucial times, lack of rebounding, fouls down the stretch," Van Gundy said. "I'm just thinking about how we can get better." After Barry's basket gave Seattle the lead, Yao hit a free throw with two minutes to go. Radmanovic drained a 3-pointer from the right corner for an 83-79 edge. A free throw by Yao with 17 seconds left got Houston within 84-83, but Lewis sank his free throws. After a timeout, Francis threw away an inbounds pass.
