Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Walter McCarty helped the Boston Celtics rebound from their biggest blowout loss of the season. McCarty stopped a big run with a 3-pointer down the stretch as the Celtics held off the Golden State Warriors, 100-91. Paul Pierce collected 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists and McCarty added 16 and seven rebounds for the Celtics, who were blown out by the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, 105-82. In this one, Boston held an 83-65 lead before Golden State scored the final basket of the third quarter and carried its momentum into the fourth. They held the Celtics without a bucket for the first 5:16 and pulled within 89-87 on a 3-pointer by Nick Van Exel with 3:26 left. But after a timeout, the Celtics looked for McCarty, and the league's sixth-most accurate 3-point shooter nailed a shot from the arc with 3:13 to play. "Our offense doesn't set plays. We just go out there and play," McCarty said. "We make guys make decisions. This game is about driving and kicking. Someone needed to step up. They made their run, but we just needed to finish the game and we did." McCarty then blocked a layup by Jason Richardson, which led to a jumper by Pierce that opened a 94-87 edge with 2:45 left. "We had to make an effort," McCarty said. "They were on a big run and that was a big play. I just wanted to make an extra effort and hopefully spark the team." "We started getting the big stops on the road," Pierce said. "Teams make those runs, but we just have to keep our composure. They got it to two and we came down and executed and pulled out the road win." Richardson had 17 points and nine rebounds and Calbert Cheaney 11 and 10 for the Warriors, who also were blown out on Sunday, 103-79 at Denver. "We are not making excuses. They played last night like we played last night," said Warriors center Erick Dampier, who had 12 points and eight rebounds. "We know exactly what this team was going to do going into this game. We knew that they were good shooters." Former Warrior Jiri Welsch had 15 points and a season-high eight rebounds for the Celtics, whot were outrebounded, 53-43, but nailed 10-of-21 3-pointers while Golden State made just 3-of-16. McCarty was 4-of-6 from the arc and Welsch 3-of-5. "I just thought that they made some threes tonight and we didn't," Van Exel said. "They hit a lot of them tonight and that got us in a hole." The Celtics were not sharp from the line, making just 14-of-22 attempts, but the Warriors were worse, sinking only 16-of-30. "We did a good job with our foul shooting the last four games but tonight our free-throw shooting and our 3-point shooting did us in," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "We just didn't convert our foul shots and that was the difference."
