Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The 2003 edition of the Memphis Grizzlies is starting to look like previous versions. The Grizzlies suffered their season-high seventh straight loss as Rashard Lewis scored 33 points to lead Seattle SuperSonics to a 105-99 victory. One of the NBA's perennial laughingstocks, the Grizzlies have lost at least 50 games in all but one season since entering the NBA in 1995. The only time they did not lose 50 games was in the 50-game 1998-99 season, when they were a league-worst 8-42. This season, the Grizzlies were one of the early season surprises and moved a franchise-record five games over .500 following a victory over Miami on December 19. But the Grizzlies (15-17) have returned to their losing ways, falling back under .500 and into last place in the Midwest Division. "We didn't talk about it (streak or history)," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "Our losses have been between four and six points. It is extremely difficult and frustrating to lose close games." Lewis helped add to the Grizzlies' struggles as he made 12-of-18 shots, including four of the SuperSonics' 11 3-pointers. "I felt a lot of confidence in my shot tonight," Lewis said. "I was really comfortable on the ball, and I got a lot of open looks. I just felt good tonight." Ray Allen added 22 points and Brent Barry had 10 and 10 assists for the SuperSonics, who won for the fourth time in five games. They also won on the road for second time in as many nights, having posted an 87-86 victory over Houston on Monday. Pau Gasol had 32 points and 11 rebounds to lead Memphis, which played without Bonzi Wells, who missed the contest while recovering from a concussion. Gasol made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:57 to play, pulling the Grizzlies within 96-93. But Lewis and Allen took over down the stretch, combining to score the Sonics' final nine points as they held on. "Double-teams won't occur as often because teams know there's another threat on the perimeter," Allen said. "You have to pick which way you want to get beat on this." Lewis and Allen each scored 12 points in the final period, when the SuperSonics shot 52 percent (12-of-23) as they avenged a home loss to the Grizzlies in December. Jason Williams added 12 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 43 percent (37-of-86) and committed 17 turnovers. "It's just not going our way right now," Grizzlies guard Mike Miller said. "Things are tough. We're competing, we're playing hard. The main thing is we have to stick together as a team." The Sonics led by as 12 points in the second quarter, but the Grizzlies battled within 50-44 at intermission. Gasol scored 17 points in the half.
