Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- By playing the score instead of playing the game, the Dallas Mavericks nearly played the fool. The Mavericks wasted almost all of a 20-point halftime lead before Dirk Nowitzki drained consecutive 3-pointers down the stretch to seal a 101-92 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. Dallas has won three straight games, but hardly in impressive fashion. It blew a 17-point lead in Saturday's win over slumping Memphis and fell asleep after building a big bulge in this one. "It ended up almost being a frustrating night when it should have been a fun night," Nowitzki said. A 57-37 halftime advantage was whittled to 74-71 late in the third quarter. Milwaukee still was within 93-90 with 2:08 left after a jumper by Michael Redd, who scored 25 points. Nowitzki answered with a 3-pointer to double the lead. On the next possession, he struck again, making it 99-90 with 1:21 remaining. "I just stayed confident and knocked them down," said Nowitzki, who made just 8-of-19 shots. "But it should have been a lot easier night for us. We were ready but we made it hard for ourselves." Antoine Walker had 22 points and 14 rebounds and Nowitzki added 20 and 11 for Dallas, which had lost 17 of its last 23 meetings with Milwaukee. Desmond Mason scored 18 points and rookie T.J. Ford handed out 11 assists for the Bucks, who get another chance at the Mavericks at home Friday. "You can't get down by 20 points on the road against any team in this league and we did it again," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "We did a great job of getting back in it like we have all year long, but we have to address the initial part." The Mavericks held a 57-37 halftime lead but gave away nearly half of it in the first three minutes of the third quarter. "The score should be zero to zero at halftime," said Mavericks forward Antawn Jamison, who scored 17 points off the bench. "We have to look at it that way." "We kind of would love to put them away," Walker said. "We looked for those opportunities, but that's a credit to them." Redd made three 3-pointers in a 17-5 surge that cut the deficit to 74-71 with 1:21 left in the third period. A basket by Tim Thomas opened the fourth quarter and made it 76-73 before Dallas rattled off seven straight points. "We just didn't come out aggressive at all and played very passively in the third quarter," Jamison said.
