Game StoryAUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups scored 22 points but dictated play down the stretch with his playmaking as the Detroit Pistons ended their slump against the Portland Trail Blazers with a 78-71 win. Billups also had seven assists, including three in an important stretch in the fourth quarter. One was to Tayshaun Prince, who nailed a 3-pointer as the shot clock ran down with 5:50 left to put the Pistons on top for good, 66-64. Billups also drained a jumper from beyond the arc with 4:54 to go and, after a basket by Portland's Jeff McInnis, assisted on a jumper by Richard Hamilton that opened a seven-point cushion with 4:18 left. The Pistons took their largest lead, 78-67, on Corliss Williamson's layup with 1:45 to go. "I think, just overall, he was phenomenal," Pistons coach Larry Brown said of Billups. "I thought Tayshaun kind of struggled, and then (Billups) was huge at the end and did a lot of good things. It's a really satisfying win." Brown also praised Billups for his defense on Damon Stoudamire, who had six points and four assists. "I thought the whole team defensively was great," the coach said. "Chauncey did a great job on Stoudamire. We really guarded their guards and didn't let them penetrate." Hamilton scored 13 points, Williamson contributed 12 and a season-high 10 rebounds and Ben Wallace had 10, 15 and six blocks for Detroit, which ended a six-game losing streak against Portland. The Pistons, who have won three in a row overall, had not defeated the Trail Blazers since March 22, 2000 and had not beaten them at home since January 29, 1997. A key to Detroit's second win in 11 meetings with Portland was rebounding. The Pistons owned a 41-36 edge and held Portland to an all-time low in the series. "(Williamson) and Ben did a great job on the boards, especially offensively," Price said. "We missed a lot of shots early, but those offensive rebounds really count. Getting on the offensive boards gave us more opportunities." Rasheed Wallace scored 17 points and Zach Randolph had 16 and 14 rebounds, but Portland fell to 1-11 on the road. "We don't really think about (the road woes) like that," said McInnis, who chipped in 13 points. "We're moving on to the next game." Both teams struggled offensively and neither could gain a sizable advantage through the first three quarters. The Pistons shot 41 percent (32-of-77) from the field while limiting the Trail Blazers to 40 percent (28-of-70), including 27 percent (3-of-11) from 3-point range. "They got the breaks and they made shots when they needed to," McInnis said. "We had one- and two-point leads and we just couldn't quite get over the hump." "I would have liked to have won an ugly game," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "I'm sure they don't think it's ugly because they won the game. Defense is what they pride themselves on, so the way they play defense and because of Ben Wallace controlling the middle of the paint, that's a lot to do with their defense being as good as it is."
