Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett struggled with his shot but still did enough to help the Minnesota Timberwolves continue their dominance of the Atlanta Hawks. Garnett overcame 7-of-21 shooting to collect 18 points and 15 rebounds and lift the Timberwolves their eighth straight win over the Hawks, 93-75. "I couldn't find the flow early in the game," Garnett said. "The early fouls didn't help." Garnett picked up his second foul with 6:58 left in the first and sat out the rest of the quarter. But his teammates picked up the slack. Minnesota had six players score in double figures for its third straight win overall. Sam Cassell added 15 points and 11 assists while Gary Trent contributed 11 and 11 rebounds. Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 15 points and Stephen Jackson added 13 for Atlanta, which has not beaten Minnesota since a 105-94 home triumph on December 14, 1999. The Hawks have also lost six straight at the Target Center dating to April 12, 1997. "We missed a lot of shots we usually make, chippies," Abdur-Rahim said. "I don't know, you just have nights like that. A lot of shots that we make, tonight we missed." Dion Glover's 3-pointer tied the score, 34-34, with 5:22 left in the second quarter. But Minnesota closed the half with a 16-4 run. Minnesota exhibited excellent ball movement and had 32 assists. Latrell Sprewell handed out eight but scored just seven points on 2-of-13 shooting. "Other guys played well," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "The Big Three (Garnett, Cassell and Sprewell) didn't have it going, but they distributed the ball well." Hawks guard Jason Terry also struggled, shooting just 3-of-18 as Atlanta shot 37 percent (29-of-78) overall. Minnesota was slightly better at 41 percent (38-of-93) and outrebounded the Hawks, 56-31. "The bench guys kicked the heck out of them on the boards," Saunders said. "Erv (Ervin Johnson) was great in the first half. Gary was great as well, and Freddie (Hoiberg) made some clutch shots" Johnson picked up the slack for Minnesota when Garnett sat out because of foul trouble. Johnson scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first period to help Minnesota build a 22-18 lead. He finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. "It's nice to know that when you get in foul trouble you have guys that can come in and do well," Garnett said.
