Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Larry Brown left early due to illness, so he was not around to see the Detroit Pistons rally to get him his 900th NBA win. Tayshaun Prince scored 20 points as the Pistons withstood a fourth-quarter comeback by the Golden State Warriors and posted their fourth straight victory, 99-93. Richard Hamilton received a technical foul with 4:33 left in the third quarter and Brown got one two seconds later. Thinking the initial technical was on him and believing he had been ejected, Brown headed to the locker room. Play was stopped for a few minutes while officials corrected the misunderstanding and tried to retrieve Brown. But the 63-year-old coach reportedly became ill and opted not to return. "That has got to go down as one of the top 10 bizarre plays in the NBA," Pistons forward Ben Wallace said. "I knew he (Brown) wasn't coming back. He has too much of a sense of pride." "I was a little surprised that he didn't come back," assistant coach Mike Woodson added. "I don't know what he was thinking when he got back to the room, but I imagine he was pretty upset." Woodson directed the team the rest of the way as the Pistons set an NBA single-season record by holding their opponent under 100 points for the 34th consecutive game. They broke the mark set in 2000-01 by the New York Knicks. "I don't even think we thought that much about the record," Woodson said. "We're just trying to play good defense because we know that wins games, and the record just came out of it." Brown is in his first season with the Pistons after stints with Denver, New Jersey, San Antonio, the Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana and Philadelphia. Detroit nearly let the milestone win get away in the fourth quarter as Golden State used a 15-0 run to take a 91-90 lead with 1:28 remaining. But Darvin Ham converted a three-point play 30 seconds later to put Detroit ahead for good. "It almost got out of hand, but to our credit, we made some great plays down the stretch," Woodson said. Nick Van Exel missed a jumper on the Warriors' next possession and Chauncey Billups hit four free throws in the final 11 seconds for the Pistons. "We can take a lot of positives out of this one," Van Exel said. "It's a tough loss, but we played better and we can get some positive energy from this. Sometimes a loss like this can turn a season around, and that's what we have to hope for." Hamilton and Mehmet Okur had 18 points apiece and Billups added 15 and 10 assists. Jason Richardson led Golden State with 24 points and Van Exel had 18 and 10 assists. Erick Dampier contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Warriors, who have lost six in a row on the road and five straight overall.
