Game StoryTORONTO (Ticker) -- Donyell Marshall recorded 15 points and 15 rebounds as the Toronto Raptors pulled away late for an 83-73 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Marshall's 3-pointer snapped a 55-55 tie with 27 seconds left in the third quarter and ignited a 20-6 spurt that allowed the Raptors to take control. Marshall had seven points during the run. Vince Carter scored 23 points for Toronto, which used a seven-man rotation and won for only the fourth time in its last 11 games. The Raptors improved to 1-1 on a five-game homestand. "I think we did a pretty good job," Carter said. "We contained the best we could. We rebounded the ball extremely well and hit the glass. We tried not to get them second shots." The Raptors only shot 38 percent (28-of-73) but held the Suns to 36 percent (27-of-74) and held a 42-24 edge in points in the paint. Toronto outrebounded Phoenix, 46-42. "I was happy with the intensity of our team all afternoon," Toronto coach Kevin O'Neill said. "I thought we played together and I thought we executed on both ends pretty well." Stephon Marbury scored 17 points and Joe Johnson added 14 for the Suns. Shawn Marion contributed 11 and 14 rebounds. Phoenix fell to 0-2 on its four-game road trip and has dropped five of its last seven. The Suns are 4-12 since Amare Stoudemire, last season's Rookie of the Year, went on the injured list December 6 with a sprained left ankle. "We had a chance to win and just came up short," Johnson said. "I thought we slacked a few times and it cost us. When you slack or you relax on a team on their home court, they'll best you just about every time." Toronto opened its biggest lead, 75-61, on Morris Peterson's 3-pointer with 4:52 remaining. "We were able to make big stops when we needed them and hit our shots," said Raptors guard Jalen Rose, who chipped in with 16 points. "A good character win." Alvin Williams added 13 points for the Raptors, making 3-of-4 3-pointers. Peterson was 2-of-7 from 3-point range. "We doubled Vince Carter," Marion said. "Guys like Alvin Williams and Mo Pete hit threes, which hurt our momentum. We didn't push the tempo of the game."
