Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Once the fourth quarter began, Jason Kidd was in a hurry to finish off the New York Knicks. Playing at his trademark breakneck pace, Kidd scored 19 of his season-high 35 points in a furious final period as the New Jersey Nets raced to a 95-85 victory over the rival Knicks, their third straight win. Looking for his shot more than usual, Kidd still added 13 assists and eight rebounds as he dominated the game. He was terrific in the fourth quarter, setting a pace the Knicks simply could not match. "It was time to stop playing around," said Kidd, who made 11-of-27 shots. "He just took over the game," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "That's what separates him from other point guards. We had no answer for him." Knicks point guards Charlie Ward and Moochie Norris were run ragged by Kidd, who fueled a 37-point final period with 6-of-8 shooting and five assists. He was responsible for all but the first point in a 17-2 game-breaking run. "He's posting up, he's running at you, he's shooting threes, he's all over the place," Norris said. "It seems like he's doing everything." "At 6-4, to be able to do the things that he does, at that speed, with his size and strength, he's definitely one of a kind," said Nets backup point guard Robert Pack, a 12-year veteran. "He's one of the few guys who can play at that level, under control, and take over games." A free throw by Kenyon Martin, who scored 13 points, gave the Nets the lead for good at 71-70 with 6:14 left. Kidd, who scored the previous 10 points for New Jersey, made a pair of jumpers before returning to his familiar role as distributor. He pushed the break and found Kerry Kittles for a 3-pointer, set up Richard Jefferson and Martin for mid-range jumpers and again found Kittles for a transition 3-pointer, making it 85-72 with 3:20 to play. "I blinked and we were down 13," said Knicks forward Antonio McDyess, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds. "I don't know what happened." Kidd capped the run with a rebound and a court-length pass to a streaking Martin, who put home a thunderous two-handed dunk that sealed New Jersey's 12th win in 15 games. "Championship-caliber teams know when to put their foot down on the pedal a little bit," Nets coach Byron Scott said. Kittles scored 20 points and Jefferson added 15 for the Nets, who awoke in time to continue their recent dominance of the Knicks. They have won five in a row and 11 of the last 12 in the rivalry, which Kidd downplayed. "We haven't played in a playoff series against them," he said. "Those type of things haven't come up yet. The rivalry is building." Former Nets Keith Van Horn and Dikembe Mutombo had big games for the Knicks, who have lost two in a row after a season-high four-game winning streak. Van Horn scored 21 points to lead the club for the sixth straight game. Mutombo had an NBA season-high and team record-tying 10 blocks againt the team that waived him four months ago. "It was one of the games I was looking for," Mutombo said. "I wanted to win so bad. It's very disappointing."
