Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The balance of the Indiana Pacers was more than enough to overcome Tracy McGrady. Jermaine O'Neal scored 25 points to lead six players in double figures as the Pacers easily withstood 43 points by McGrady in a 114-107 victory, their sixth straight win. Ron Artest scored 23 points and Al Harrington added 19 off the bench for the Pacers, who never trailed, opened a 15-point lead after one quarter and held on despite an explosion by McGrady, the NBA's reigning scoring champion. "We're coming together," Artest said. "We're finally starting to jell. It's taken a while, but we're starting to click." McGrady made 14-of-27 shots, including 8-of-11 3-pointers, in his third 40-point game of the season. The Magic lost two of those games and were pushed to overtime in the other. "He had a good night and helped make it a good game," Harrington said. "We tried to keep him running around the 3-point line and play everyone else tough." "He's a big-time player, but we got it done because we played good team ball," Artest said. The superstar swingman scored just four points in the first quarter as the defenseless Magic fell behind, 33-18. O'Neal scored 10 points as the Pacers shot 62 percent (13-of-21). McGrady scored 20 points in the second quarter, but Orlando's deficit grew to 69-53 at halftime. He scored 11 points in the first three-plus minutes of the third period, helping Orlando pull within six points. But Reggie Miller, who had 11 points and eight assists, buried a 3-pointer to rebuild the lead to 76-67 with 7:17 left. Three follow shots by Jeff Foster, who had 10 points and 11 boards, pushed the advantage to 86-73 with 3:18 remaining. "It was just too much Jermaine and Ron Artest and Al Harrington off the bench," McGrady said. "Those guys play together every night." Jamaal Tinsley scored 16 points for Indiana, which improved to 27-10, best in the Eastern Conference. "This was an unusual type of game for us," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "We played our fourth (game) in five nights, so it made it tougher defensively. But when you win six in a row, I'm not going to nitpick." Orlando have lost five in a row to fall to 8-27, the worst record in the NBA. Juwan Howard (19 points) and Gordan Giricek (11) were the only other Magic in double figures.
