Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings gave the Atlanta Hawks a lesson in passing. The Kings had 32 assists, increasing their league-leading total, and rode another big game from Peja Stojakovic to an easy 105-89 victory over the sloppy Hawks. The best passing team in the NBA, the Kings average better than 27 assists per game and ran a clinic on the Hawks en route to their fourth straight win. They never trailed, shot 48 percent (41-of-85) after a searing start and committed just eight turnovers. "It was a good night for us passing," said Kings guard Mike Bibby, who had 19 points and six assists. "Everybody contributed, the ball was hopping - we're so hard to guard when we do that," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. By contrast, the Hawks are 23rd with just under 20 assists per game and commit 18.2 turnovers per game, third-highest in the league. It was more of the same in this one as they committed 23 turnovers, leading to 33 points for Sacramento. Guards Jason Terry and Jacque Vaughn had five apiece and rookie guard Boris Diaw committed four. "It's been killing us all year long," said Hawks swingman Stephen Jackson, who scored 19 points with one turnover. "That is what Sacramento stives off of - turnovers and easy baskets." "We didn't have the proper focus tonight," added Atlanta forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who also had 19 points with two turnovers. "Turnovers, mistakes, lack of concentration, you just have different guys. One time it might be me, one time another guy, and it just boils over." Stojakovic scored 28 points to lead five players in double figures. He was on the receiving end of passes all game as center Vlade Divac had a season-high 10 assists, guard Doug Christie had six and forward Brad Miller had five with 20 points and 10 rebounds. "We move the ball really well," Divac said. "Offensively, it makes it very easy for us." The Kings sped to a 38-23 lead after one quarter, shooting 71 percent (15-of-21) from the field while forcing seven turnovers by the Hawks. Sacramento led by double digits the rest of the way. "You can't turn the ball over in the beginning and expect to get back in it," Jackson said. "It was a hard climb to try to get back in it and we just couldn't do it." The Hawks fell to 2-2 on a six-game road trip.
