Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant was booed all game. His Los Angeles Lakers teammates were treated even worse by the Denver Nuggets. Bryant's first game here this season was a forgettable one as the shorthanded Lakers showed little fight in a 113-91 loss to the Nuggets, who got 22 points from supersub Earl Boykins. It was Bryant's first game in Denver since he was charged with rape in Eagle, a resort town near Vail, this summer. Facing four years to life in prison if convicted, he has made a handful of trips for court appearances, but this was his first appearance on the court. Bryant was treated like an enemy of the state as he was lustily booed during pregame introductions and every time he touched the ball by the Pepsi Center record crowd of 19,739. He seemed unaffected by the harsh treatment and scored 27 points. "I've been booed before," Bryant said. "I don't think about it. I don't pay attention to it. I'm out there playing basketball. I come in expecting the worst." While Bryant has claimed he is innocent, his teammates seemed to enter a plea of no contest. Again playing without injured frontcourt stars Shaquille O'Neal and Karl Malone, they trailed, 63-48, at halftime and by at least double digits thereafter. "Kobe was very animated tonight," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson, whose team has lost four in a row. "He gave his competitive best. He was feisty. I wish the rest of the players were as competitive." Los Angeles' starting frontcourt of Devean George, Slava Medvedenko and Horace Grant combined for 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting, collecting nine rebounds and 10 fouls. "We gave up," Grant said. Boykins made 9-of-13 shots, including four 3-pointers, as he led an energized effort that made the Lakers appear to be standing still. Fellow reserve Chris Anderson had eight points, 14 rebounds and three blocks, leading an overwhelming performance in the paint. "The biggest difference was our energy level, from our starters to the bench," Boykins said. "I felt good and I was aggressive." "We were running, sharing, rebounding and playing good D," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. Denver held a 60-37 advantage on the boards, leading to a 56-28 margin in points in the paint and 17-2 in second-chance points. As a result, the Nuggets registered their biggest win over the Lakers since a 111-84 rout on November 12, 1993. "I don't have the clarity of mind right now to speak insightfully about the game," Jackson said. "Obviously, it wasn't very entertaining." Rookie Carmelo Anthony and Andre Miller scored 20 points each for Denver, which had lost four of its last five games. The Nuggets avenged a 101-99 loss in LA on December 19 in which Bryant returned from a Colorado court date to make a buzzer-beater. "They beat us up tonight," said Bryant, whose team trailed by 23 points in the fourth quarter.
