Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Rookie Carmelo Anthony and Nene did a good amount of scoring for the Denver Nuggets against the Utah Jazz. Veteran Marcus Camby did a little of everything. Anthony scored 27 points, Nene added a career-high 25 and Camby produced the fifth known game in NBA history with at least five in each major statistical category as the Nuggets beat the Jazz, 106-96. Camby had eight points, 11 rebounds, five assists, eight blocks and five steals before fouling out in the final minute. Only two players in NBA history had been known to have turned the trick before Utah's Andrei Kirilenko did it twice last month. "I don't worry about stats. I just play," Camby said. "The only stats I worry about are wins and losses. I just try to play hard every night and set the tone defensively." The Nuggets saw a 19-point halftime lead dwindle to 89-84 when Utah's Jarron Collins split a pair of free throws with 5:51 left. Nene countered with a layup and Anthony a three-point play. Camby then stole the ball in the paint to trigger a fast break that culminated in a spectacular alley-oop dunk by Anthony that made it 96-84 with 4:40 remaining. "That was a big energy boost for us," Anthony said. "They were making a run at the time. After that we just kept control of the game." "Carmelo has been playing outstanding all year," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "He continues to improve and is playing great basketball." Anthony briefly got shaken up after apparently getting elbowed in his throat by Utah's Raja Bell in the final minute of the third quarter. "It was real physical out there," Anthony said. "Everybody from the point guard to the big man was physical out there. It just boosts my energy up and makes me want to go out there and play even more physical. I know the refs aren't going to let me play physical, but I'm going to go out there and try." DeShawn Stevenson scored 19 points to pace Utah, which was missing coach Jerry Sloan. Assistant Phil Johnson coached the Jazz as Sloan accompanied his wife, Bobbye, to a cancer specialist to discuss treatment options for a malignant tumor in her pancreas. Carlos Arroyo had 16 points and Greg Ostertag added 15 and 13 rebounds for the Jazz, who again were without forward Matt Harpring (strained right knee). Kirilenko contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds but made only 3-of-14 shots. Denver, which led throughout, opened up a 28-14 advantage after one quarter behind 12 points from Nene. He added another seven points in the second quarter to help the Nuggets extend their lead to 54-35. "The last time I looked we play 48 minutes. You can't expect to play 24 and win," Johnson said. "We didn't help each other defensively in the first half. We were just like deer in the headlights."
