Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers took out their recent frustrations on the Atlanta Hawks and snapped a season-high four-game losing streak. Bryant scored 26 points as the Lakers cruised to a 113-67 rout of the Hawks, their first win since superstar Shaquille O'Neal's calf injury. O'Neal is expected to miss at least the next two games because of a strained right calf. The Lakers also are without star forward Karl Malone, who is on the injured list for the first time in his career. Against the lowly Hawks, O'Neal and Malone were not missed. Los Angeles held Atlanta scoreless for nearly five minutes, racing to a 14-0 lead. "We changed some things defensively and offensively that we ordinarily wouldn't do with Shaq and Karl in the lineup," Bryant said. "It helped us out tonight and we really did a number on them defensively, we realy held them down." "I think they came out with a fury and played that ballgame with the intensity to the game that is necessary to win," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. The Lakers outscored the Hawks, 34-7, in the opening quarter and led, 57-28, at halftime. "We were really active cutting off lanes and being aggressive," Bryant said. "We were on the ball, boxing guys out, limiting them to one shot and then getting out on the break." The Hawks never got back in the game and was a basket away from the worst loss in Atlanta history, trailing only a 132-85 loss to Philadelphia on December 8, 1982. "Anytime you take a whoopin' like that it's obviously disappointing, you know we didn't really come out and play basketball," Hawks center Theo Ratliff said. Stanislav Medvedenko had career highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers. Medvedenko nearly topped his previous career high of 18 in the first half, when he had 16 and 10 boards. "I feel like I can score and that I should tonight," Medvedenko said. "It felt really good." Derek Fisher and Bryon Russell were the only other Lakers to reach double figures with 11 points apiece. The Hawks' total was a season low for a Lakers opponent. Stephen Jackson scored 13 points for Atlanta, which fell to 2-3 on its six-game road trip. "We didn't come to play, they lost a couple of games and jumped on us early and we were never able to get back into the game," Jackson said. Atlanta forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim was just 2-of-4 for seven points. The Hawks were outrebounded, 45-29, and committed 20 turnovers.
