Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady and the Orlando Magic held onto a big halftime lead to snap their six-game losing streak. McGrady scored 35 points to lift Orlando to a 103-92 victory over the Washington Wizards, who have lost eight straight road games. "I told the guys before the game, 'The way we've been playing in the second half defensively, let's start the game out that way,'" McGrady said. "They responded." Orlando led 15-7 with 4:24 left in the first quarter before going on a 23-6 run to build a 38-13 advantage with 5:45 left in the second period. Orlando led 45-25 at halftime and easily held to beat Washington for the 13th time in the last 14 home meetings. "We had a lot of guys really stepping up and playing a good solid defense which allowed us to create a lead," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "We needed every one of those points in the second half because we did not finish the game the way we would like to." Rookie Keith Bogans scored 13 points, Lee Nailon added 11 and Juwan Howard 10 and 12 rebounds for the Magic. Larry Hughes scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half for Washington, which has lost four in a row overall. Kwame Brown added 17 points off the bench while Gilbert Arenas contributed 15. "We are just not making shots," Hughes said. "I think we are making a conscious effort to get to the basket first, but we are just not making shots." Washington entered the game as the worst shooting team in the league at 41 percent. The Wizards lived up to their reputation in the first half, shooting 22 percent (8-of-36). They also were outrebounded, 34-15. After McGrady completed a rare four-point play to make it 63-44 with 6:06 left in the third quarter, Washington went on a 15-6 run in the next four minutes to cut the deficit to 69-59. "We picked it up," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan. "The guys talked to each other, they're in it, they're helping each other. We were very competitive." The intensity developed into two minor confrontations. Arenas and Bogans received double technicals with 10:03 left in the third quarter. Bogans had some harsh words for Arenas after the Wizards guard delivered a hard foul on him. McGrady and Wizards center Brendan Haywood received double technicals four minutes later after exchanging words. Magic guard Rod Strickland left the game in the second quarter with a strained left hamstring and did not return.
