Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Jerry Sloan was back on the bench for the Utah Jazz. The Atlanta Hawks are back to being the Atlanta Hawks. Sloan returned from a one-game absence to guide the Jazz to an easy 92-71 victory over the Hawks, who have lost their last three games by a combined 83 points. Sloan missed Friday's loss at Denver as he accompanied his wife, Bobbye, to a cancer specialist to discuss treatment options for a malignant tumor in her pancreas. Back on the bench, he watched his club beat the Hawks at home for the 10th straight time. "After watching some of the game last night, I'm disappointed with the way we came out and played, and we had some of that tonight," Sloan said. "We kind of got acclimated a little bit better in the second part of the ballgame and tried to make a little bit more of a commitment." DeShawn Stevenson scored 13 of his 17 points in the third quarter for the Jazz, who led by as many as 36 points. Stevenson led the team in scoring for the second time in as many nights. "It felt good," said Stevenson, who made 8-of-12 shots. "Everybody has their day. Sometimes I go out there and hit every shot. ... Today was my day. It just happened. I felt good and I just kept shooting." The Hawks surprisingly won two of the first three games of their six-game road trip but have reverted to form over the last five days. After a 105-89 loss Tuesday at Sacramento, Atlanta suffered a 113-67 trouncing by the Lakers on Friday. "Right now we're frustrated," Hakws coach Terry Stotts said. "We've been on the road a long time and we look forward to getting home." "Tonight was a little easier than I thought it was going to be," Jazz swingman Raja Bell said. "They've got a lot of talent over there but they didn't seem like they wanted to play." The Jazz held the lead the final three quarters. Andrei Kirilenko scored seven of his 12 points in a 9-0 burst that gave Utah a 49-35 advantage in the final minute of the first half. Stevenson scored nine points in the first five minutes of the third quarter, including a thunderous dunk that made it 60-43 with 7:09 left. "After that big loss yesterday, we wanted to come back and get a big win," Stevenson said. "We came out and (Sloan) was on us fron the get-go, and we went out there and played hard." A 3-pointer by rookie Sasha Pavlovic gave Utah its largest lead at 88-52 with 7:52 to play. Carlos Arroyo scored 14 points for the Jazz, who shot 47 percent (32-of-68) and held the Hawks to 39 percent (26-of-66). Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Dion Glover scored 15 points apiece for Atlanta. "When things go bad, you have to look at yourself as a team and look at yourself as an individual, realize you can do better and just commit to that," Abdur-Rahim said.
