Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Maybe it was the residue of the frigid conditions that have followed them over the past week, but the Portland Trail Blazers were ice cold. Vince Carter scored 20 points and Donyell Marshall had 16 and 11 rebounds as the Toronto Raptors took advantage of a dismal shooting performance by the Blazers and posted an 83-72 victory over the Trail Blazers. Portland had a game with Memphis on Tuesday postponed due to a snowstorm in the Pacific Northwest. The Trail Blazers then endured more cold weather in the Midwest, where they lost at Minnesota and Chicago. The chill continued at the Air Canada Centre, where the Blazers shot just 32.5 percent (26-for-80) from the field, including a woeful 3-for-21 (14.3 percent) in the second quarter. "Tonight was about not being able to score the basketball," Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We had a horrible shooting night from the outside, which makes it hard on the inside guys." Only a three-point play by Jeff McInnis with 13.9 seconds left kept the Trail Blazers from their lowest point total of the season. Portland scored 71 points in a loss to Detroit on New Year's Eve. "We made them make tough shots and tried to limit them to one shot," Carter said. "We had to get to the line, get them in foul trouble and get them flustered." Portland guard Derek Anderson endured a long afternoon, missing all 10 of his shots from the field and finished with just two points. Damon Stoudamire had 11 points, but made just 4-of-15 shots. Jalen Rose added 17 points for the Raptors, who led by double digits for most of the second half and easily won the matchup of undermanned teams. The Blazers played their second game without center Rasheed Wallace because of a sprained left ankle suffered Thursday against Minnesota. The Raptors played their second straight game without rookie center Chris Bosh, who has a sprained right knee. With Carter setting the tone, all five Toronto starters scored in double figures. "I'm reluctant to say everybody plays off of one guy because I don't think that's fair to the rest of the team," Raptors coach Kevin O'Neill said. "But he is playing the way he will be very effective for our team." Toronto led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter, taking a 68-52 lead on a basket by Marshall with 9:27 left. The Raptors built a 43-33 halftime lead with the help of a 9-2 run late in the second quarter. Lonny Baxter had a pair of baskets and Morris Peterson had a 3-pointer in the spurt which gave the Raptors a 34-25 lead with 3:25 left. Luck also went the Raptors' way as Peterson banked in a 3-pointer as time expired at the end of the third quarter to make it 63-50. "We just didn't have it," said McInnis, who led the Blazers with 20 points. "We just missed a lot of shots." Dale Davis of the Blazers had 15 points and 13 rebounds.
