Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- For one night, Stephen Jackson has to be glad he went to the Atlanta Hawks. Jackson nearly recorded a triple-double and sealed the game with a long jumper as the Hawks held on for a stunning 86-77 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Jackson became a free agent in the offseason and wound up signing with the Hawks for less money than the Spurs offered. He has been frustrated with one of the worst teams in the league instead of playing a supporting role with the defending NBA champions. "Playing against your old team, you have to be up for this kind of game," he said. "I just went out there and let the game come to me. I think when I played San Antonio (earlier this season), I was playing like I had something to prove. And today, I was just out there as a teammate, and the game came to me and I was able to play well." The Hawks led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter after dominating the first half. But the Spurs opened the fourth quarter with a 13-4 run, pulling within 69-65 on a hook shot by former Hawk Kevin Willis with 5:55 left. Atlanta was clinging to a 75-73 edge before Jason Terry buried a 3-pointer with 1:54 remaining. After the teams traded empty possessions, Jackson buried the decisive jumper over Devin Brown from the right wing with 34 seconds to go. "That's what I do. I hit big shots," Jackson said. "I've been doing it for years. It's something about the fourth quarter. P.J. (Spurs assistant P.J. Carlesimo) told me that I have a knack for hitting big shots." "I was happy for (Jackson)," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "You're always happy when a guy plays his old team (and does well). He played really hard for 46 minutes, and that's what we're stressing as a team. Give yourself a chance by playing hard and competing, and Jack bought into it." Jackson finished with 16 points, a season-high nine rebounds and career high-tying seven assists and Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 29 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who had lost their previous three games by an average of more than 27 points. "Our guys came back strong after a rough week," Stotts said. "We played the team that is the hottest in the league and we competed and withstood their second half aggressiveness. We made shots when we had to." Duncan had 28 points and nine rebounds and Tony Parker was the only other player in double figures with 12 points for the Spurs, who had their eight-game road winning streak snapped. "Atlanta did a fine job tonight, they deserved to win the basketball game," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "Life is fair. They deserved to win it. They were the aggressors all night long." San Antonio had won 32 of its previous 35 road games against the Eastern Conference but got off to a terrible start, shooting just 33 percent (13-of-39) from the floor and getting outrebounded, 26-14, in the first half. "I thought we were pathetic in the first half," Popovich said. "We had no aggressiveness or intensity. We tried to dig out of it in the second half, but Atlanta continued to grind it out and played good basketball." The Spurs finished just under 33 percent (26-of-79) overall, including 2-of-15 from 3-point range.
