Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Ben Wallace and the Detroit Pistons crashed the boards. The Chicago Bulls just crashed to another loss. Wallace led a big night on the boards and Richard Hamilton scored 24 points as the Pistons extended their winning streak to nine games with a 105-89 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Wallace collected 10 of his 17 rebounds in the first quarter for the Pistons, whose winning streak is their longest since an 11-game tear from December 26, 1990-January 17, 1991. "We came out hard in the first half," Wallace said. "After watching the film, we knew we can get on the break and get some easy baskets, but we had to crash the boards. In the first quarter, we got the boards and that led to some easy baskets." Led by Wallace, the Pistons held a lopsided 56-35 rebounding advantage. Wallace also had six of the Pistons' 22 offensive boards. "We really rebounded well tonight," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "After the first half, I looked at the shots and was shocked." "We looked at clips at halftime where we were not even near Ben Wallace," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "You can have three guys on him and he still can get six offensive rebounds. We just turned our heads and he ran right by us. It is distressing because part of our game plan was to keep him out of there." Hamilton set the offensive tone in the opening quarter, scoring 10 points as the Pistons grabbed the lead for good in the first minute of the contest and built a 28-17 advantage after one period. Detroit led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter en route to their seventh straight win over Chicago. Chauncey Billups added 17 points for the Pistons, who shot 43 percent (37-of-86). Rookie Kirk Hinrich was one of the few bright spots for the Bulls as he scored 19 points and handed out 12 assists. But he could not help Chicago avoid losing for the sixth time in its last nine games. Bulls forward Scottie Pippen was activated from the injured list before the game. He was not a factor as he missed his four shots and went scoreless in 12 minutes off the bench. Hinrich's 3-pointer with under four minutes left in the third quarter pulled the Bulls within 64-59. But the Pistons closed the period strong, capped by Chucky Atkins' shot from beyond the arc for a 73-63 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Atkins also opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, and the Pistons looked like they would pull away, taking their biggest lead at 88-68 with a free throw by Tayshaun Prince with 8:17 remaining. After the Bulls needed less than four minutes to reel off a 15-2 run, the Pistons answered with a 15-6 surge over the final 4:27 of the contest.
