Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Yao Ming got the message. After a benching in his last game, Yao responded with 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Houston Rockets put forth nearly a complete effort in a 93-80 triumph over the Washington Wizards. Yao played just eight minutes and was scoreless in the second half of Sunday's 97-93 loss to the Boston Celtics. After the game, Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy talked about his team's inconsistent play and vowed to get to the root of the situation. Yao had scored a total of just 35 points in his last four games but dominated the third quarter of this one, scoring 14 points as Washington built a 73-65 lead heading into the final 12 minutes. "I think we played well tonight, but I'm hoping we can do the same the next game - come out and meet (coach Van Gundy's) expectations," Yao said through an interpreter. "We've been trying to feed him the ball all season, but it's hard against teams that put two guys in front of him and one in back of him," Rockets guard Steve Francis said. Francis had 16 points and 10 assists for the Rockets, who shot 51.5 percent (35-of-68) from the field. Jimmy Jackson and Cuttino Mobley scored 16 points apiece as the Rockets improved to 7-2 on the road against Eastern Conference opponents. The Rockets also set a season high with 27 assists. "Well, when you make shots, that's also how you get assists," Van Gundy said. "Sometimes we move the ball real well and we don't shoot particularly well. Tonight we shot well." Larry Hughes led Washington with 23 points but made just 9-of-24 shots. As a team, the Wizards shot just 39 percent (29-of-74) and were outrebounded, 44-31. "You have to finish plays," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "You have to make (the refs) make the call. That's part of being a man in this game." Houston appeared poised to break open the game early, bolting to a 19-5 lead. But it was clinging to a 56-54 edge with five minutes left in the third quarter when Maurice Taylor sank two free throws. Yao followed with a jumper and four free throws to push the lead to double digits. Washington never took the lead in the fourth quarter and trailed by as many as 13. The Wizards, who were seeking consecutive wins for the first time in nearly two months, were without starters Jerry Stackhouse and Gilbert Arenas - who are injured - and Christian Laettner, who was suspended by the league Tuesday. Washington has dropped 10 of 12 and fell to 6-10 at the MCI Center. Francis had eight rebounds and seven turnovers. "Three turnovers shy of a quadruple-double, that would've been very special," Van Gundy said. "I haven't been around a quadruple-double. Yes, he did a good job. He had many implosions with the ball, but other than that he shot a high percentage and made good plays for everybody."
