Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Every once in a while, Reggie Miller reminds all of his younger teammates why he is the greatest player in Indiana Pacers history. Miller scored all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter to rescue the Pacers, who blew a double-digit lead but recovered for an 85-78 victory over the upset-minded Atlanta Hawks. "Hopefully, I didn't need a game like this to let everyone know I'm still a weapon," Miller said. "I think a lot of us take Reggie for granted because he's done it so many times," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "To play at this level at 38 years of age is nothing less than remarkable." A future Hall of Famer, Miller has seen his role reduced over the last several seasons as the emphasis has shifted to young stars Jermaine O'Neal and Ron Artest. Miller was virtually invisible through the first three quarters, when O'Neal and Artest helped build a 58-47 lead. But the Pacers went cold, going without a basket for nearly eight minutes and relinquishing the lead. The all-time leader in 3-pointers, Miller drilled a pair to end an 18-2 run by the Hawks and give the Pacers a 68-65 lead with 5:29 to play. He added another after a steal to restore a 73-72 edge with 3:21 left. "I did see a sense of urgency," Miller said. "The offense was kind of stale. Our ball movement wasn't as crisp as it was in the first two quarters." "Reggie is a guy that's always going to be there when we need him," O'Neal said. "Nine times out of 10, he'll be there. He's not a guy that's going to take 20 shots a game. He doesn't need to, because we have so many weapons." That was enough to rejuvenate Miller's younger teammates. A steal and layup by Jamaal Tinsley gave Indiana the lead for good and O'Neal added two free throws and a jumper for a 79-74 bulge with 1:19 remaining. O'Neal had 26 points and 16 rebounds and Artest scored 23 points for the Pacers, who have won eight of their last nine games. They overcame 34 percent (24-of-71) shooting and 19 turnovers. "Obviously, we've got great scorers in Jermaine and Ron and even Al (Harrington)," Miller said. "But when things aren't going well for them or the defense focuses so much on them, if I can sneak in now and then and keep them honest, it's important for me to do that." Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 16 points and Jason Terry added 15 for Atlanta, which has lost nine straight visits to Indiana. The Hawks shot under 40 percent (32-of-81) and fell to 0-3 against the Pacers this season. "Reggie Miller hit some clutch baskets down the stretch and we didn't shoot the ball well, me in particular," said Terry, who made just 6-of-19 shots.
