Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki made just enough shots and Earl Boykins missed more than a few. Nowitzki scored 22 points and led a fourth-quarter surge as the Dallas Mavericks held off the Denver Nuggets, 91-88, for their third straight narrow victory. Michael Finley and Antawn Jamison scored 16 points each for the Mavericks, who played the final three quarters without All-Star point guard Steve Nash, who aggravated a right hip injury. Nevertheless, Dallas kept winning the close ones, having needed overtime to beat New York on Monday and double OT to edge Philadelphia on Wednesday. It is 4-2 in games decided by three points or less. "We have to be more aggressive in the fourth quarter and probably be more aware of our lead," Nowitzki said. "We have to find a way to stop people at the end and today I think we got a little lucky." Nowitzki made a 3-pointer, jumper and two free throws to build a three-point lead to 86-78 with 4:56 remaining. "We have so many scoring weapons that you have to respect all of us," Nowitzki said. "They have to give up something. I found myself open a little bit." The Mavericks made just one basket thereafter as the Nuggets rallied behind Andre Miller, who had 28 points and 10 assists. His layup and two free throws made it 86-84 with 2:12 left. "I was just trying to be aggressive," Miller said. "They were playing a zone most the game. They were really on Carmelo (Anthony) and Voshon (Lenard), so I wanted to be aggressive." The 5-5 Boykins missed a transition jumper that could have tied it, and Finley made him pay, sinking a 3-pointer at the other end. "Toward the end of the game, we have a lot of players that can knock down big shots," Jamison said. "At the end tonight, they were focused on Dirk Nowitzki. Michael Finley was able to get some good looks at the end of the game. He has been hitting those shots all year." Miller kept coming with another layup and two free throws, and the Nuggets had a chance after Nowitzki was called for a charge with 17 seconds to go. But Boykins, who was just 1-of-10 from the field, fired an airball on a 3-pointer. "We didn't execute that play very well," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We had everything in place but we didn't execute with force. We were very soft." Finley made two free throws, and Rodney White missed a desperation 3-pointer, sending Denver to its third straight loss. The Mavericks took the lead for good at 51-49 with 8:47 left in the third quarter on a dunk by Antoine Walker, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Walker's layup at the 7:07 mark made it 58-50, but the Nuggets closed to 71-67 entering the final period. Nash headed to the locker room with 2:04 left in the first quarter and may miss some action to allow the injury to heal. "I need to force myself to sit out and let the hip get better and prevent any further injuries," he said. "Hopefully this won't be too serious. I'm not going to get too down about it." Marcus Camby pulled down 19 rebounds for Denver, which was undone by 39 percent (38-of-97) shooting. "It just wasn't going in tonight," said Anthony, who made just 5-of-18 shots. "We were fighting down to the end and we let it slip away."
