Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups and the Detorit Pistons overcame some sloppy ballhandling to extend to their longest winning streak in 14 years. Billups scored 26 points to lift Detroit to its 12th straight victory, a 99-94 triumph over the Milwaukee Bucks. "They were trying to extend their home-winning streak and we were trying to extend ours," Pistons forward Corliss Williamson said. "I think you saw two competitive teams out there. We are just happy we found a way to win especially since they had their home court behind them." Detroit is now just a win away from tying the franchise record for consecutive victories in one season set in 1990, its last championship season. The Pistons last won 12 straight during that same season from February 25-March 20, 1990. Richard Hamilton added 22 points while Corliss Williamson and Ben Wallace had 13 apiece for Detroit. Wallace also contributed 11 rebounds and three blocks. "We wanted it, we wanted it more," Hamilton said. "We knew they couldn't win just by shooting threes. We knew we could win if we played solid and rebounded as five, we would be all right." "It was a great win," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "I thought they played good, I thought we played good. We turned the ball over a little more than we should have." Detroit committed 18 turnovers, but overcame the miscues by shooting 51 percent (38-of-74). Michael Redd scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half for the Bucks, who saw their 10-game home winning streak come to an end. Tim Thomas added 22 points for Milwaukee and Desmond Mason had 11 off the bench. "Somebody had to lose tonight and it was us," Thomas said. "I was pleased with our effort tonight as far as it being a big-game situation." Thomas hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to cut the deficit to 97-94. But Billups hit two free throws a second later to conclude the scoring. Bucks center Dan Gadzuric missed his fifth straight game with a sprained knee. With Gadzuric out of the lineup, Detroit outrebounded Milwaukee, 45-32. Brian Skinner started at center for the Bucks and had four points and eight rebounds in 35 minutes. "We concentrated on our style of play and the way we need to play," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "Detroit is a good team, they've won 12 in a row, so they're really in a groove right now. We just have to continue to fight." Detroit led 68-62 with 1:31 left in the third quarter before Redd scored 13 points in the next five minutes to help Milwaukee take a brief 79-78 lead. Chucky Atkins hit a 3-pointer 50 seconds later to put Detroit ahead for good, 81-79.
