Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Memphis Grizzlies guard Jason Williams missed the second half with a migraine. Mike Miller gave the Philadelphia 76ers a headache. Miller's running layup with 36 seconds left gave the Memphis Grizzlies the lead for good in a 91-87 victory over the 76ers. Forced to handle the ball with point guards Williams and Earl Watson out of the game, Miller drove around a screen set by Pau Gasol on the left side and banked in a layup from the lane over the outstretched arm of Derrick Coleman, snapping an 87-87 tie. "That's what you got to do even if you don't get a lot of shots in a game," said Miller, who took just four shots in 25 minutes. "When it comes down to the end, that's what you're supposed to do. You're supposed to make plays, set up people and score yourself. That's what I did." As expected, Philadelphia called on Allen Iverson to tie the game, but the superstar guard missed a runner in the lane and Bonzi Wells rebounded and was fouled. He hit 1-of-2 free throws with 23 seconds remaining. Sixers coach Randy Ayers then inserted long-range shooter Kyle Korver, but the rookie rushed a 3-pointer from the top of the key with Shane Battier in his face. "It's on me," Ayers said. "I put a young guy in a situation where I didn't help him and it was just a lack of execution." Miller rebounded and made 1-of-2 free throws with 18 seconds left. He scored just five points, all of them in the last three minutes. The win was the sixth in seven games for the Grizzlies, who played the entire second half without Williams. "He (Williams) suffers from bad migraines and it affects his vision," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "At halftime, he had to put the towel over his head because the pain was too much." When Watson fouled out in the final minute, Memphis was without a point guard and went with Miller and Wells - two shooting guards - in the backcourt. Gasol led Memphis with 16 points, despite missing the last four minutes of the third quarter and more than half of the fourth after being accidentally kicked in the groin by Eric Snow as he drove to the basket. The loss was especially disconcerting for Philadelphia, which held an 84-78 lead after a jumper by Glenn Robinson with 5:44 remaining. But the Sixers scored just three points the rest of the way - a basket and a free throw by Iverson, who finished with 34 points. "Down the stretch, the 13 possessions where they only get three points was major," Brown said. "I thought we did a good job in covering the penetration into the lane (where) they couldn't get good looks." Robinson scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half, when Philadelphia built a 55-49 lead.
