Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Even with their point guard on the sidelines and their coach in the locker room, the Dallas Mavericks had too much for the Portland Trail Blazers. Michael Finley scored 33 points and Dirk Nowitzki added a season-high 32 as the Mavericks rallied for their fourth straight win, a 108-104 victory over the slumping Trail Blazers. The Mavericks knew they would be without Steve Nash, their All-Star point guard who aggravated a hip injury in Friday's win at Denver. Late in the first quarter, they lost coach Don Nelson, who received two technical fouls and was ejected for arguing. Dallas surrendered 68 points in the first half and faced a double-digit deficit early in the third quarter. But Finley and Nowitzki combined for 16 points in each of the final two periods. "With both Mike and Dirk feeling it, it helps out a lot," Dallas forward Antoine Walker said. "No matter who was on them, or what happened, they found a way to get their shot," Portland guard Derek Anderson said. The Mavericks have won their last four games by a combined 16 points. Both Finley and Nowitzki credited the defense, which held the Trail Blazers to 36 points in the second half. "We took it upon ourselves individually to step up our defense and aggression, and it worked for us," Finley said. "We just stepped it up a little bit on defense," Nowitzki added. "We started talking and got active, and I think that was the key." Rasheed Wallace returned after a four-game absence due to a sore ankle and scored 24 points for the Trail Blazers, who have dropped four in a row. The subject of rampant trade rumors, Wallace had eight points in the fourth quarter but missed three shots in the final minute. "I was really happy to have 'Sheed' back," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We're a better team when Rasheed steps out on the floor. No matter what happens with the trade stuff, make no mistake, he makes us a better basketball team." A jumper by Nowitzki, who made 10-of-18 shots, pulled Dallas into a 92-92 tie with 7:47 to play. Finley, who sank 13-of-23 shots, added a pair of 3-pointers 31 seconds apart for a 98-96 lead. Finley hit a jumper and Nowitzki drilled a 3-pointer for a 103-97 lead with 4:35 remaining. "I thought Finley made the difference and offset their loss of Steve Nash," Cheeks said. Two layups by Ruben Patterson, who had a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, cut the deficit to 105-104 with 1:20 left. But Wallace missed a 3-pointer and jumper, Nowitzki made two free throws and Wallace missed another 3-pointer. Antawn Jamison scored 16 points and Walker added 10 and 11 assists for Dallas, which despite Nash's absence committed just nine turnovers while forcing 20. Zach Randolph had 18 points and 10 boards for Portland.
