Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Keith Van Horn has made Lenny Wilkens' return to the NBA an easy transition. Van Horn scored 16 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as the New York Knicks extended their winning to three games with a 101-96 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Van Horn scored a season-high 30 points in Wilkens' debut on Friday as the Knicks routed Seattle. New York remained unbeaten since firing Don Chaney on Wednesday after Van Horn, who had just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting in the first three quarters, dominated the final minutes against the Bulls. "He has to shoot like he believes in it," Wilkens said. "He knows I'm not going to pull him if he misses a shot. I told him 'if you're going to shoot, do it.'" Chicago had a 77-76 edge with just under 10 minutes remaining before Van Horn scored eight consecutive points to give New York the lead for good. He buried back-to-back 3-pointers and sank a jumper in the lane to make it 84-77 at the 7:19 mark. "I knew we were down and the teams needed me to do something," Van Horn said. "Lenny wanted me to keep shooting and I was going to. Fortunately, the fourth quarter I got it together." Van Horn is averaging 22.2 points in his last 14 games - five points above his season average. "I know my role is to score and help us win," he said. "I'm feeling really comfortable out there on the court. I haven't felt this way in a long while." Van Horn made a hook shot and 1-of-2 free throws before Othella Harrington sank a pair from the line to cap a 17-5 run and give the Knicks a 93-82 cushion with 2 1/3 minutes to go. After scoring just 12 points on 3-of-21 shooting in the third quarter, the Knicks made 9-of-20 shots and 11-of-14 free throws en route to 33 points in the final period. They scored more than 100 for the fourth consecutive game. "I think it was just a little over a minute, we have up a seven-point lead," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "Then we struggled and spent the rest of the time playing catch-up." Allan Houston scored 26 points and Kurt Thomas collected 12 and 13 rebounds as New York won for the fourth time in five games following a four-game slide. Stephon Marbury collected 18 points and eight assists for the Knicks, who shot less than 39 percent (32-of-83) from the floor but made 10-of-15 3-pointers and 27-of-33 free throws. Jamal Crawford and Eddy Curry scored 20 points apiece to lead the Bulls, who lost for just the second time in their last seven meetings with the Knicks. Chicago shot 61 percent (23-of-38) in the first half but still trailed at halftime and made only 15-of-43 shots in the final 24 minutes. "If they handed out W's after the first half, that would be great," Skiles said. "We just let down and it really hurt us."
