Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- "Plastic Man" put the wraps on Tracy McGrady when it mattered most. Stacey Augmon helped slow down McGrady in the fourth quarter as the New Orleans Hornets rallied for a 91-90 victory over the Orlando Magic that snapped a four-game losing streak. The 2003 NBA scoring champion, McGrady torched the Hornets for 31 points through three quarters, helping the Magic build a 75-66 lead. Hornets coach Tim Floyd went to the 6-8 Augmon, who is nicknamed "Plastic Man" for his long arms and defense, to guard McGrady in the fourth quarter. McGrady managed just a pair of free throws while missing three shots. "Stacey is terrific defender," Floyd said. "He's as good as a defender as there is in this league." It came down to McGrady vs. Augmon in the waning seconds. With the Magic trailing by one point, McGrady took the inbounds pass and drove around Augmon to the basket, where he drew contact from P.J. Brown and watched his layup roll off the rim with less than a second remaining. "Stacey's one of the few guys in the league who can give Tracy trouble," Brown said. "He's long, he's athletic, he can stay between him and the goal and make things tough for him, and he did. Every time McGrady got the ball, he never let him have a free look. Everything McGrady got tonight, he earned, and that was because of Stacey's great defensive play." "I thought there was some contact down there (on McGrady's shot), but that wasn't why we lost the game," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "We lost it on second shots and turnovers." Augmon also was an offensive threat as he scored 12 points to lead a strong bench effort for the Hornets, who swept all four games from the Magic this season for the first time since 1990-91. Veteran Steve Smith added 17 points and Robert Traylor 14 off the bench for New Orleans, which got a season-high 45 points from its reserves. In the fourth quarter, the Hornets got 21 of their 25 points from their bench. Sparked by the bench, the Hornets used a 13-3 run to start the fourth quarter, capped by Traylor's reverse layup to tie the game at 78-78 with 7:46 left. Smith's eight-footer with 2:39 left gave the Hornets the lead for good, 89-88. After an Orlando turnover, Augmon hit a fadeaway with 2:10 to go, extending the margin to three. "Our bench played together," Smith said. "You can see it in practice, we always play together, we move the ball and play hard and I think that was the key tonight." "Their bench really hurt us tonight, particularly Steve Smith and Traylor and Augmon," Davis said. "They just did a nice job." The Hornets need a big night from their bench as leading scorer Baron Davis scored 16 points but made just 6-of-23 shots. Backcourt mate Darrell Armstrong, who moved into the starting lineup with David Wesley going on the injured list earlier in the day, made just 4-of-14 shots and scored nine points. "Somebody has to pick up the slack," Smith said. "He (Baron Davis) is only human, he can't have an MVP-type game every night and he has been carrying us the whole year." Juwan Howard added 16 points and Tyronn Lue 10 for the Magic, who shot 51 percent (36-of-70) but committed 21 turnovers that the Hornets turned into 22 points.
