Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Larry Hughes and the Washington Wizards used one of their best offensive performances of the season to snap a three-game losing streak. Hughes scored 27 points to lead the Wizards to a 99-84 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics. "It wasn't pretty, but it was aggressive," Hughes said. "We matched their intensity. They came at us strong, and we came back at them strong." Kwame Brown added 18 points while rookie Jarvis Hayes had 14 and a season-high 13 rebounds for Washington, which had five players score in double figures. The Wizards shot 51 percent (41-of-80) from the field, the first time they have made more than half of their shots in a game this season. "It (shooting over 50 percent) felt good because we always knew we were capable of doing it, but we never have been able to string it together and do it," Hayes said. Ray Allen scored 19 points for Seattle, which has lost a season-high four in a row, matching its longest slide of the season. Antonio Daniels had 16 points while Ronald Murray and Rashard Lewis each scored 13. "Right now I'm not reaching these guys," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "We are playing poor and we're not playing together defensively. We are not stopping anyone defensively." The game was tied, 45-45, at halftime. But Washington opened the third quarter with a 22-8 run to build a 67-53 lead with 5:10 left. Seattle, which entered the game second in the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage (38 percent), was held to 27 percent (8-of-26) and 39 percent (33-of-84) overall. Allen was just 6-of-20 from the field and 2-of-9 from the arc. Lewis also struggled, connecting on 5-of-15 from the field while missing all six 3-pointers. "Our shots are not going in," Lewis said. "We are just in a drought right now. We're not playing together as a team, we're not shooting the ball well, and it just seems that the ball isn't bouncing our way right now." Washington committed 20 turnovers but forced 21. "We just kept after it," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "We stayed aggressive. This is probably the first time in a long time we kept our denial defense up. With that team you have too, you can't sag off." Hayes was hurt with just over three minutes remaining when Lewis accidentally elbowed him in the chest. The rookie lay on the court for about a minute after play was stopped but was able to get up and finish the game. A dunk by Jerome James with 7:05 left cut the deficit to 82-74. Washington responded with a 13-5 spurt to extend its lead to 95-79 with 1:47 remaining.
