Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace and the Portland Trail Blazers continue to struggle on the road. Wallace missed all six of his shots in the fourth quarter, including a potential game-tying jumper with 8.4 seconds left, as the Trail Blazers lost to the Phoenix Suns, 96-92, for their 16th setback in 18 road games this season. It was the Blazers' season-high fifth consecutive loss and ninth in 10 games. "We had some shots down the stretch, we just couldn't finish those shots," said Portland coach Maurice Cheeks, who emerged from the locker room in tears but would not say why. "We couldn't convert. I thought we played a heck of a game." "We played good enough 'D' to win the game," said Portland guard Damon Stoudamire, who had 10 points. "We had plenty of opportunities but sometimes when you go through a streak like we are going through, they just don't happen right now." Joe Johnson scored 25 points, including the go-ahead basket with 18 seconds left, and Shawn Marion added 22 and 16 rebounds for the Suns, who matched a season high with a third straight victory. Phoenix trailed, 92-90, before Marion tied the contest with a jumper in the paint after grabbing an offensive rebound with 1:19 to play. Wallace missed a jumper with 37 seconds left before Johnson put back an airball shot by Marion to give the Suns the lead with 18 seconds to play. "They played last night (at Dallas) and got in late," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Rasheed's legs might have gone a bit because he had some looks in the lane and missed it." The Trail Blazers called timeout and worked the ball to Wallace, who missed a turnaround jumper over Marion and Jahidi White. Marion was fouled with 6.4 seconds to play and capped the scoring with a pair from the line. "It's a good win for us, I think that overall this game was a good momentum builder for us," Marion said. "We got some key stops when we needed them, and that gave us the opportunity to get out and run and focus more on getting to the basket, instead of settling for jump shots." Rookie Leandro Barbosa scored 20 points and Amare Stoudemire added 16 for the Suns, who also won three in a row from November 18-22. Stoudemire sat out the last 4:41 with a sore left ankle suffered on a spectacular block of a dunk attempt by Ruben Patterson. The reigning Rookie of the Year, who missed 18 games after badly spraining the ankle at Boston on December 5, will not accompany the Suns to Los Angeles to take on the Lakers on Monday. "I got fouled on the play (before) so I didn't want him to get away with it," Stoudemire said. "I went up and blocked the shot and he came down right on my ankle. I can't let nobody force me to come back and play and tell me that is OK when I know it is not." Zach Randolph had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who were outrebounded by the smaller Suns, 43-34. Wallace added 19 points but shot 6-of-17. The Suns are 3-0 since settling on a starting lineup of Marion, Stoudemire, Barbosa, Johnson and Jake Voskuhl. "We have used this same lineup for the past three games and I think that we are building some chemistry with it," Marion said. "This could be a lineup that we go with for a while, at least while we're winning with it."
