Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Bucks are known for their depth, but it was Tracy McGrady who finally got some help from his bench. McGrady scored 34 points and rookie Zaza Pachulia and Gordan Giricek made key contributions as the Orlando Magic built a big lead and held on for a 106-99 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. It was the 14th 30th-point game of the season for McGrady, whose club won just 10 games in the first half of the season. But if Orlando can get the kind of performances it received from Pachulia, Giricek and Rod Strickland on Monday, the second half could be much better. Pachulia and Giricek each scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and Strickland played most of the way after starting point guard Tyronn Lue left with an injury, collecting 12 points. "We did get some good play from our second unit today," said Magic coach Johnny Davis. "Zaza gives us a lot of energy, plays with a lot of passion, and Gordan came out and was aggressive offensively." Milwaukee's 10-man rotation has drawn raves from coaches around the league, but only Desmond Mason made a meaningful contribution off the bench with 18 points. The rest of the reserves managed just nine points as Orlando outscored Milwaukee's bench, 43-27. "Their second unit got whatever they wanted at the basket," said Bucks coach Terry Porter. "I don't know if they thought it was a 5-on-zero dummy drill or something the way they were scoring. Are they accustomed to their bench guys scoring the way they did? I don't think so." Pachulia and Giricek combined to hit eight shots in the second quarter, when the Magic shot 74 percent from the field and outscored the Bucks, 31-19, to build a 57-42 halftime lead. McGrady scored 20 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer which opened an 85-68 lead with 10:38 left. But Tim Thomas and Joe Smith combined for 12 points in a 17-6 run, pulling the Bucks within 96-90 with 1:17 left. Strickland blew past rookie T.J. Ford and converted a layup for Orlando with 1:08 remaining, but Erick Strickland and Michael Redd hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Bucks within 98-96 with 25 seconds left. "My heart did drop at that point," McGrady said. "After playing as well as we did, we couldn't let that game get away." Juwan Howard hit a pair of free throws and McGrady followed with a steal and dunk with 19 seconds left. After another 3-pointer by Erick Strickland, McGrady hit two free throws and Giricek had a steal and dunk with nine seconds left to seal the win. "We came back but we didn't have enough at the end to get over that hump," Smith said.
