Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- It took two months, but the Washington Wizards finally put together back-to-back wins. Kwame Brown and Juan Dixon combined for 11 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes as the Wizards rallied for a 93-83 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Chicago led by as many as 18 points in the first half but scored just 25 points in the second half and collapsed down the stretch. Washington outscored the Bulls, 18-2, in the final 4 1/2 minutes as Brown converted a three-point play and made four free throws and Dixon added a tie-breaking jumper and a layup. "We picked up our defense, that was the key," said Brown. "Juan gave us a lift off the bench and everybody really played tough defense." Jamal Crawford hit a 3-pointer to give the Bulls an 81-75 lead with 4:57 left, but the Wizards scored the next 10 points. Brown started the spurt with his three-point play and Etan Thomas followed with another three-point play to tie it at 81-81 with 3:54 to go. Dixon gave Washington the lead for good with a 15-foot jumper from the left side, then stole the ball from rookie Kirk Hinrich and converted a layup with 2:19 remaining. Eddy Curry scored Chicago's last basket, powering inside off a rebound with 1:52 left. But Wizards rookie Jarvis Hayes hit a runner in the lane with 59 seconds to go. Brown made four free throws and rookie Steve Blake added a pair in the final 30 seconds to seal the win. Washington was coming off a 99-94 victory here over Seattle, giving it back-to-back wins for the first time since November 17-19. A victory didn't seem likely in the first half after Hinrich scored 10 straight points on a pair of layups and a pair of 3-pointers, giving the Bulls a 53-38 advantage with 4:06 left. A jumper by Kendall Gill increased the lead to 58-40 with 1:13 remaining. "We've been doing this a lot this year, having really good first halves, kind of hanging around a bit and losing the lead," said Hinrich, who finished with 15 points. "I think they turned up their intensity and we didn't match it. We stopped being aggressive." Washington doubled Chicago in the third quarter, 24-12, as Larry Hughes scored nine of his 25 points. A layup by Dixon, who scored 17 points, and a jumper and a layup by Hayes to start the fourth quarter gave Washington a 73-70 lead. Crawford, who scored a career-high 42 points against Washington on December 27, led the Bulls with 19 points. "I think this was probably the worst (loss) because we were up by 15 at the half," Crawford said. "It is embarrassing, basically. There is no other way to put it."
