Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Derek Anderson saved 
Maurice Cheeks from shedding more tears.

Anderson scored 12 of his 29 points in overtime as the Portland
Trail Blazers - the league's worst road team - bounced back from
a collapse in regulation for a 109-104 victory over the
Sacramento Kings in the toughest place to win in the NBA.

Cheeks openly wept following Sunday's loss at Phoenix, clearly
frustrated with a struggling team that had lost nine of 10.  He
may have had another breakdown if Portland lost this one after
blowing a nine-point lead in the final 51 seconds of the fourth
quarter.

"I don't know how to explain it," Cheeks said.  "They made a
miraculous comeback.  But I give our guys credit.  We've been in
that situation before and we kind of dropped out heads.  This
particular game, we did not."

Anderson dominated the extra period, scoring all of his team's
points as Portland snapped a five-game slide against the best
home team in the league.

The Trail Blazers lost star forward Rasheed Wallace, who had 26
points and a season-high 15 rebounds, in the opening minute of
overtime after he committed his sixth foul.  But Anderson took
control of the offense.

"I was given opportunity and I found my rhythm," Anderson said.
"I got my number called and I played basketball.  I got a
smaller guy on me and I had to make the shots, and I had enough
confidence to do it."

Anderson made a layup, a 3-pointer and a jumper before giving
Portland the lead for good at 105-104 with 70 seconds left by
making 1-of-2 free throws.  He added two from the line before
sealing the game with a jumper with 17 seconds remaining.

Sacramento did not make a shot in overtime, scoring all of its
points by making 7-of-9 free throws.

"We got back and tied it, but when you get into overtime, you've
got to make stops and execute and we didn't do either one,"
Kings coach Rick Adelman said.  "We just didn't play well enough
to win the game."

The Trail Blazers won for just the third time in 20 road games
this season while Sacramento was handed its third loss in 24
games at Arco Arena.

"When we've lost so many games, this is just a win," Anderson
said.  "It was a good win for us, especially with the type of
team we played, but if we can't beat anybody else, it doesn't
mean anything."

Zach Randolph collected 16 points and 11 rebounds for Portland,
which made 49 percent (42-of-86) of its shots from the floor but
was just 21-of-37 from the line.

Peja Stojakovic scored 34 points and Bobby Jackson added season
highs with 29 points and 10 rebounds off the bench before
becoming one of three Sacramento players to foul out.

"We get what we deserved" Jackson said.  "I think it was a
wake-up call.  We've got to come ready to play every night.
They came in ready to play and we didn't."

The Kings shot just 33 percent (28-of-85) from the floor but
made 11-of-28 3-pointers and 37-of-47 free throws.

Portland had a 92-84 cushion before Stojakovic buried a
3-pointer with 46 seconds to go.  He was fouled on a 3-point
attempt 13 seconds later and made all three free throws to get
Sacramento within 93-90.

Jeff McInnis, who was benched Sunday, committed a turnover, then
inexplicably fouled Jackson on a 3-pointer with 11 seconds
left.  Jackson failed to tie it, making 2-of-3 free throws.

Wallace sank a pair of free throws for a 95-92 lead with seven
seconds left, but Kings center Brad Miller was left wide-open
for a tying 3-pointer from the top of the key to force overtime.
