Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics' hot start was enough to sink the struggling Golden State Warriors. Rashard Lewis and Brent Barry combined for 15 points in the first quarter as the SuperSonics jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 103-87 victory over the Golden State Warriors, who have lost 12 straight road games. The SuperSonics returned from a 1-3 road trip and had lost five of their previous six games but wasted no time jumping on the struggling Warriors. "Sometimes coming off a trip like that you can be a little sluggish," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "Tonight we came out and established control." "Our focus was to come in early and execute and get off to a good start," Barry added. "We needed to get some confidence back in our basketball club right now, the first quarter was it for us. This was one of those NBA games where we really needed to get on top of our opponent and stay on top of them the rest of the game." Barry made a 3-pointer and a pair of layups in the opening 7 1/2 minutes as Seattle jumped out to a 18-8 lead. Lewis had eight points in the opening quarter and his dunk gave the SuperSonics a 26-10 cushion with 66 seconds left. Seattle made 12-of-23 shots in the opening period en route to 29-14 lead, holding Golden State to 5-of-24 shooting. "Our starters got off to a great start, both offensively and defensively," Lewis said. "We just moved the basketball and played the way we wanted to play." The SuperSonics never relinquished the lead and cruised to their fifth win in the last six games at Key Arena. They had their largest lead at 63-42 after Ray Allen buried a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter. Antonio Daniels scored 18 points and Barry finished with 17 for Seattle, which had five players in double figures and avoided falling below .500 for the first time since December 27. Lewis had 13 points, Allen added 13 and nine rebounds and Jerome James grabbed 10 boards as the SuperSonics held a 48-39 rebounding edge and scored 46 points in the paint. Mike Dunleavy Jr. had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Speedy Claxton also scored 18 points for Golden State, which has not won on the road since December 17 at Atlanta. "We just need to go out and put four quarters together on the road," Dunleavy said. "I don't think it's something that's mental because we have been in plenty of those games that we have lost. We just have to stick with it." Jason Richardson, the Warriors' leading scorer, was held to three points on 1-of-11 shooting in 20 minutes.
