Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- In his hometown, Michael Finley was the driving force behind the Dallas Mavericks' latest win. Finley scored 12 of his 23 points in the third quarter as the Mavericks extended their season-high winning streak to seven games with a 106-93 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Finley grew up in the Chicago area. Before starring at the University of Wisconsin, he played at Proviso East High School in Mayfield. The 6-7 guard continued his recent tear and helped the Mavericks gain control in the third. "It was fun to come home," Finley said. "It was even more fun to come home and get a win. So it was a good homecoming." Finley played the entire first quarter and sat through the second as Dallas took a 54-46 lead into the locker room. But behind Finley's hot shooting, the Mavericks extended their advantage to 84-72 entering the fourth quarter and 97-79 with just over seven minutes remaining. "We thought we had pretty good rhythm to attack them," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Mike was good tonight. Part of that is that I gave him some rest in the first half." "The team played well and we did what it took to win," Finley added. "Coach rested me a bit in the first half and it gave me a chance to get my legs and I felt fine in the second half." Dallas scored the first eight points of the second half before Chicago rookie Kirk Hinrich hit three 3-pointers in a 13-0 run. But with the lead in jeopardy, Finley took over, hitting a pair from the arc and a jumper. Finley kept it going in the fourth with another 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to give Dallas a 19-point edge. Finley made 8-of-17 shots and is averaging 25.4 points in his last seven games. He scored 31 points in Thursday's home win over the Los Angeles Lakers and his big effort in the third period helped Dallas beat Chicago for the 12th straight time since December 1997. "Finley is a great player," Hinrich said. "He makes so many tough shots and he made some open ones, too." While Finley and Dirk Nowitzki combined for 49 points, the rest of Dallas' starters totaled just 24 points. But the reserves picked up the slack, including Shawn Bradley, who chipped in 13 points and effectively defended Eddy Curry. "I was looking at the final boxscore as I came over," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. Antoine Walker (was) 2-of-11, Nowitzki (was) missing shots and we kept (Steve) Nash in pretty good check. Their bench hurt us." Finley was one of seven players to reach double figures for the Mavericks, whose last three wins have been by double digits. Dallas began this run with overtime wins against New York and Philadelphia and won close games at Denver and Portland. Chicago has lost six consecutive games. The Bulls got a season-high 23 points from Hinrich, who made five 3-pointers.
