Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Darrell Armstrong filled in and Jamaal Magliore stepped up. Armstrong had 18 points, nine assists and five steals and Magliore had 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks as the New Orleans Hornets edged the Denver Nuggets, 97-91. New Orleans, which is trying to get by without injured starters Baron Davis, David Wesley and Jamaal Mashburn, dressed just nine players and had lost six of its previous seven games. But with the veteran Armstrong playing a bigger role and Magliore playing big inside, the Hornets were able to get back on track. "This was a great win for us, with the amount of bodies we had," Magliore said. "Everybody had to play extended minutes." Robert Traylor had 13 points in 19 minutes off the bench for the Hornets, who had lost four of its last five at New Orleans Arena. "When you have guards injured, like B.D. and David Wesley, you have to find scoring in other places," Traylor said. "With those guys down, we're looking inside. ... We're just trying to get into the bonus and give ourselves a chance to win." Rookie Carmelo Anthony led Denver with 24 points. Andre Miller chipped in 17 and six steals, but the Nuggets had their three-game winning streak stopped. "That was a hard fought basketball game and New Orleans was just a little bit better than us," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "They made timely plays and timely shots and we didn't." New Orleans led by 10 in the final quarter and was ahead 88-82 with 3:26 to go. But Anthony took over and buried a 17-footer and had a dunk 19 seconds apart to make it a one possession game. P.J. Brown had an 18-footer 95 seconds later but a 3-pointer by Miller sliced the Nuggets' deficit to 92-91. Denver had a chance to take a lead on its next possession but Brown blocked a shot by Nene and Stacy Augmon made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. "We had them, it's just that they got some calls and knocked down their free throws and that tied things down," Miller said. Magliore had five dunks and tied a career high with nine field goals made. "My teammates got me in good position and good angles to the basket," Magliore said. "The game plan from the beginning was to start with Big Cat (Magloire) down low and try to get it inside," Brown said. "We did not want to settle for jumpers tonight. We have been settling for too many perimeter shots lately. We felt that if we were to have a chance to win tonight we had to get it inside and work from inside out." Marcus Camby had a big first quarter for Denver with 12 points and five rebounds but did not score over the final three quarters. He finished with 15 rebounds. Denver was just 2-of-13 from 3-point range but 17-of-19 from the free-throw line. New Orleans shot 51 percent (36-of-70) from the field, helping to offset 18 turnovers.
