Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Ever since Lenny Wilkens took over, the New York Knicks have been getting the breaks. Stephon Marbury scored 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and made a clutch 3-pointer off the backboard in the final minute as the Knicks posted a 96-94 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. New York's season has turned around since changing coaches, winning five of six since Wilkens was hired. The Knicks bounced back from their first loss under their new coach with a little bit of luck. The game was tied at 89-89 when New York's Penny Hardaway missed a 3-pointer, but Dikembe Mutombo secured the offensive rebound. The Knicks gave the ball to Marbury, who took an ill-advised 3-pointer over Terry that hit the glass and went in with 30 seconds remaining. "It was a big shot. I didn't call glass either," Marbury said. "I'll take luck all day. I love the pressure. I love being in situations like that. It's a great opportunity. When opportunity knocks, you have to take advantage of it." "He started to get the hot hand and he was confident and the ball went in for us," Wilkens said. "You need those bounces sometimes." Terry answered with a runner, but Hardaway and Kurt Thomas each sank a pair of free throws in the final 13 seconds to secure the win. Keith Van Horn scored 18 points and Allan Houston added 17 for New York, which shot 52 percent (33-of-63) from the field, including 9-of-13 from 3-point range. It was the first close game for the Knicks since Wilkens took over. Their previous five games had been decided by double figures, including four wins by an average of 14 points. "I don't believe in the ball just bouncing your way by chance. I just believe you have to make your breaks," said Houston, who made 7-of-15 shots. "To pull it out like that is encouraging for us. The bottom line is when it counted the most, we were able to find a way to get it done." Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 25 points and Stephen Jackson added 19 as the Hawks failed to win consecutive games for the first time this season. "We just have to keep after it," Abdur-Rahim said. "It was a tough loss. You give yourself a chance to win if you go out there and play hard and play right. That's all you can ask. You just want to finish these games."
