Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Each time Paul Pierce missed a shot in the first three quarters, it seemed like Mark Blount was in the right position to put it back. Blount scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds as the Celtics pulled away in the third quarter before holding on for a 100-89 victory over the Washington Wizards. Pierce missed 10 of his first 13 shots, but thanks to Blount and the rest of Boston's suporting cast, the Celtics were able to take a 46-37 lead into the locker room. After shooting just 38 percent in the first half, Boston turned it up in the third quarter and grabbed a commanding 78-59 lead entering the final period. While Pierce led the Celtics with 24 points, he made just 8-of-23 shots. But Blount, who reached double figures for the eighth consecutive game, turned several of Pierce's misses into easy baskets in the opening moments of the second half. Facing the Wizards for the first time this season, Blount continued to produce as he had his second double-double of the season. In his last eight games, he is averaging 13.3 points and shooting 54 percent (43-of-80). "Mark Blount has been fantastic, playing more and more minutes," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "He's the anchor to our defense by far. (I) couldn't even mention anybody in that category. He's invaluable to our basketball team right now." "I was just protecting my teammates and trying to get us out on the break," said Blount, who has played at least 30 minutes in 12 of his last 13 games. "Once we get out on the break, we do very well." Blount's effort was indicative of Boston's game in the first 36 minutes. The Celtics shot just 41 percent (35-of-86) but were contstantly making hustle plays and had a huge 43-25 rebounding edge through three quarters. "We felt like we played poorly in the first half and we really wanted to pick it up in the third, get up on them and press them a little bit and push the tempo" Pierce said. "We were able to turn them over and get on the break and get some good things but we didn't continue that in the fourth." However, the Celtics needed clutch baskets from Pierce and Ricky Davis to avoid a huge collapse. Behind reserves Juan Dixon, Christian Laettner and rookie Steve Blake, the Wizards got within 87-83 following a free throw by Brendan Haywood with 3:36 to play "It's too bad that we have to play so poorly to play so well," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "That's not the mark of a winning team. We have to out and compete and stay in the game and be composed and compete better than our starters did, especially in the third quarter." But Pierce sank a jumper from just inside the arc with 2:59 remaining and Davis buried an uncontested 3-pointer from the right side to give the Celtics a 93-83 advantage with 2:20 to play. Fourth quarters have been a problem for Boston this season and Friday was no exception. The Celtics led by as many as 26 late in the third period.
