Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Gary Payton frequently was sloppy with the ball, but he came up big when the Los Angeles Lakers needed it most. Payton, who had committed seven turnovers, nailed a clutch 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to help the Lakers hold on for a 93-86 triumph over the Utah Jazz and snap a nine-game road losing streak. Slava Medvedenko matched a career high with 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Payton scored 22 points for the Lakers, who had not won on the road since December 4. "It was good for us to get a road win," Payton said. "Now we gotta go home and get some more. We can't lose at home." The Lakers host Seattle on Wednesday and Minnesota on Friday before embarking on a season-high seven-game road trip. Kobe Bryant, who had missed six games with a sprained right shoulder, added 21 points to help the Lakers beat the Jazz for a fifth straight time. "It bothered me (on) some shots, some fouls," Bryant said. "It feels dead right now. I will get some treatment tomorrow, we will heal it back up. I expected it to feel that way after the game." Los Angeles held an 86-75 lead after Payton made a running jumper with 3:52 remaining before Utah pulled within 87-84 when Carlos Arroyo made a pair of free throws with 1:01 left. Payton missed a jumper with 35 seconds remaining, but the Jazz mistimed the rebound and Medvedenko grabbed the loose ball. The ball was worked to Payton, who seemed to surprise Arroyo with a shot from the top of the arc. The shot dropped through and essentially ended the contest. "We like the matchup with Gary, even though they were able to get him to turn the ball over," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "He did have a stellar game for us and made some key plays." DeShawn Stevenson scored 17 points and Arroyo added 16 for the Jazz, whose season-high losing streak reached five games. Utah is 0-4 since losing do-everything forward Andrei Kirilenko to an ankle sprain and is without forward Matt Harpring (right knee) for the rest of the season. "I still believe that you have to come prepared to play hard and play with intelligence regardless (of) who is on the floor," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We are (frustrated)," said Utah center Greg Ostertag, who had 10 points and eight rebounds. "I don't anybody on the team is worried about injuries - you know, we got them, there ain't nothing you can do about them." The Lakers converted 20 Jazz turnovers into 29 points, while Utah managed 15 off 12 Los Angeles giveaways. Los Angeles forward Karl Malone, who spent the first 18 years of his Hall of Fame career with the Jazz before signing with the Lakers in the offseason, did not make his first trip to the Delta Center as a visitor because he is on the injured list for the first time in his career (sprained knee). The Lakers will not visit Utah again until March 8.
