Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers are becoming a respectable road team. Damon Stoudamire made a season-high six 3-pointers en route to 18 points and handed out a season-high 11 assists as the Trail Blazers secured their first road winning streak of the season with a 94-83 victory over the Washington Wizards. Portland lost its first 10 games away from home this season and entered Monday with the worst road record in the NBA at 4-16. But the Trail Blazers built on Tuesday's win at Sacramento against the shorthanded Wizards. "The last couple of years we were very comfortable playing on the road and we have to get back to that pace," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We have to win some games on the road to get ourselves back in the thick of this thing." Stoudamire made three 3-pointers in the second quarter, when Portland shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from the floor and outscored Washington, 26-15. "To be honest, this is the most shots I've got in awhile," said Stoudamire, who was 6-of-12 from the floor. "I haven't really taken that many shots in a game. If I get a volume of shots, I know I can shoot the ball. I just haven't been shooting it that much." Stoudamire buried a shot from the arc with 29 seconds left in the first half to give the Trail Blazers their largest lead at 59-37. "The way we started out playing the game was good," Cheeks said. "The focus was on not just trying to score by yourself but by putting the ball in the post. That's where our game opened up. That's what made us." The Trail Blazers never trailed in the second half, but the Wizards used a 15-4 run in the fourth quarter to pull within 83-80 with 4 1/2 minutes left. The Trail Blazers had an 85-81 edge before Derek Anderson buried a 3-pointer with a 1:47 remaining. Zach Randolph, who scored 10 of his 16 points in the first quarter, buried a jumper to put away the game with 78 seconds to go. "Fortunately for us, we made some shots down the stretch and they missed some shots they had made earlier," Cheeks said. Rasheed Wallace scored 16 points and Wesley Person added 12 on 5-of-6 shooting for Portland, which shot 52 percent (38-of-73) from the floor and made 11-of-21 3-pointers. "When they shoot 52 percent from three, then you're in for a long night," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "I thought we cared about the game, we cared about giving the effort to win the game. We just faced a team that was red hot." The Wizards failed to build on Saturday's victory over the league-leading Indiana Pacers as they played without leading-scorer Larry Hughes, who sat out with knee tendinitis. Juan Dixon scored 20 of his career-high 30 points in the second half and Kwame Brown added 11, 10 rebounds and a career-high five assists for Washington, which had a three-game home winning streak snapped. "We had to play catch up once again," Dixon said. "We put forth a great effort in the second half and we came up short."
